Family near Indy needing a Basenji !

  • Well as I said in the welcome thread, I live just west of Indy, and have been wanting a Basenji for a few years, my daughter is finally old enough where it is practical, as well as my schedule will now allow me to invest in one

I am looking to make a Basenji part of our family and and spoil her or him rotten.;)

Due to my wife's allergies we must have a purebred, but I am trying to obtain one at a somewhat "reasonable" price if possible. However I really can't put a price on what he would mean to us. so… let me know !!

  • Please consider www.basenjirescue.org as a resource. So many dogs need homes and they can be of great support to you! I wish you the best.

  • Are you west of Indy as in Indianapolis IN?
I am in Lebanon if you are.
I adopted from BRAT in Nov of O5 and I was very impressed with them as an organization. They made sure that my basenji and I were a good fit and the people are so nice.
I also ended up with an amazing little boy who I wouldnt trade for anything.
Check on the BRAT website, I know of one that is available to the right home, but there are usually more that are in the process of being posted. Get your home visit scheduled and let them know you and know what kind of B you are looking for and they may be able to find you one.

Hurry up and get yours, its almost "dog park" weather:)

My Squiggy and my sister's Petey love to go to the Eagle creek park. Maybe we will see you there!:)

Yes I have already applied and have been intially contacted by BRAT yesterday. I hope to hear back again on the status soon.

I'll keep you updated, cross your fingers !

  • Bob, count on BRAT. They'll get you a good one. I promise!

I will keep them crossed for you guys!

Squiggy and I went o Eagle Creek dog park yesterday and although it was a muddy mess he had a blast. Some of the dogs would not chase him (which is his fave game)….So hurry up and get yours so my B can have some competition out there :)

BRAT really is great, keep us all her updated.

  • I actually have something (female) that might fit the bill for you - if you have not found anyone by you - let me know.

@venserro - Please be sure to check out pedigrees and also health testing, you should always check that out for yourself... I always refer anyone interested in Basenjis, including my own breed to Ofa.org to review DNA testing... you can look for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org and you would be better looking at the Pacific Northwest...pleaseask for references and for sure health testing. +

@JoBlanchard said in ISO Basenji near Iowa!: @DebraDownSouth My babies are papered and pampered... and tested....and every puppy that went home went with their papers and a copy of their parents papers including test results . I have 5 Basenjis... and one is neutered... so I guess I am considered a rare backyard breeder. Backyard breeders *byb) can breed once or 100 times.. it isn't about how often. Neither is rare. In fact, it's the one-time backyard breeder who does the most damage in this country (all breeds and mixes, not just basenjis). Nothing rare about it. Most byb that I have dealt with only bred a few litters. Doesn't change their byb status. All registered dogs have "papers". Pet store dogs often have "papers" as do puppymills. In fact, there are a lot of puppymill/scam registries, so even dogs that aren't AKC have "papers." What makes someone a responsible breeder is having the genetic testing done on their dogs. It is understanding bloodlines and breeding to improve the breed, not just make puppies to sell. It is placing pet quality puppies on spay/neuter only contracts, and/or requiring owners to prove their dogs' value by showing, health clearances, dna testing, etc before they can breed. A responsible breeder isn't made by just having papers or pampering their pets. Sometimes they may only breed once or a few times. Deciding not to continue breeding a line or at all doesn't mean they weren't responsible when they did it. Do you understand what I'm trying to say? So are you a backyard breeder or a responsible one? Giving the names or akc numbers that you bred makes it easy to check AKC and OFA for health testing. It's pretty simple. There are also people, btw, who started out as byb, who truly wanted to learn, to do better, and got involved, educated, found a mentor and got a dog worthy of breeding and worked to become a responsible breeder. But the person has to actually want to do it. Other people start getting educated about breeding and realize they have really done an injustice to the breed and decide that the won't do that any more, but that they also do not want to commit to really getting into becoming a responsible breeder. Some of the most dedicated rescue people I know were once byb. So I'm not trying to beat you up, but without you sharing your pedigree, you're the only one who can say if you are a byb or a responsible breeder. As others have pointed out, responsible breeders are proud of their dogs and pedigrees and testing.

@naz-roseberry I think it will work out well with Cutlers "Grandma & Grandpa" lol. I think that the move to a new neighborhood with 10 times the kids upset Cutler bcoz it was 10 times more noise than he was used to. Plus, I think some kids teased Cutler when you weren't right there with him & it was just too much for him noise wise & the teasing just flat pissed him off! At least Cutler is still in the family! He knows the people he's going to live with & he'll be able to see his before family when you all go to visit! I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to have to put him down just because he wasn't able to adjust to the new neighborhood. I'm really happy that you don't have to go thru that too. Hopefully, all's well that ends well ~ right? Take Care! Nancy Berry
