Toys

  • I would be interested in hearing what type of toys have lasted in your house.

We swear by Nylabones and Kong but I recently tried this tire rubber material toy and was disappointed.

Zahra loves stuffed animals too but they do not last long in this house.

    Anyone else have some favorites?

  • Some of my fav's that have lasted: Sergeant’s Buddy Glow Ball, Busy Buddy Squirrel Dude, the Talk to Me Treat Ball, and the big black kong.

as for stuffed ones… I will buy stuffies on clearance ($1-$3) and let my dog destroy them ... no huge loss. But if I get a NICE one ($10+), it's "my" toy. My dog gets to play with it WITH me, and is not allowed to rip it to shreds. I find he respects the toy more if it's "mommy's toy". this way the toys lasts, and being given permission to play with it is one of the BEST rewards he can get.

  • Green bunny is the survivor at our house. Abbey has tons of animals that we rotate but bunny is her number one favorite. She also likes her squirrel ball with a battery. You push the button and he goes all over the house by himself. She's figured out how to corner him against the wall to turn him on! He had a big bushy tail for about 5 minutes. I like to get the really tough animals at Petsmart that are practically indestructible. Abbey doesn't like anything made of rubber. If it talks to her, sings, or plays music she's all over it!

  • I know this thread was from a while back, but I really like the 'tuffie" toys.
Not totally shred proof but well made and the "tuff"est soft toy I have found at shops. They are very cool.

  • The only toy goober hasn't detroyed or rejected is the first toy he ever had. one of those ropes with the two big knots and all the tassles.

  • We just bought the tricky treat ball and she has not stopped playing with it for over 20 minutes, this thing is great. We had a buster ball before but it was made of hard plastic and was really loud.
She loved orka toys when she was a puppy, but chews them up way too quickly now.
She also loves Nylabones, especially the great big one that looks like a femur.

Great advice on the 10,000,000,000 beads – I was careful today to check the toys I bought. Those can't be healthy for the pups - not to mention the house. Fiji is pretty delighted with the stuffed ball I got her. She's spent the last couple of hours alternately tearing it up and licking its wounds. Not quite velociraptor style (that cracked me up):D but the thing will definitely be history by bedtime. Well worth the 99 cent store price and a little clean-up time! Other than this, though, yeah, Fiji just doesn't seem to be into toys. Walks, and running into the other dogs in the neighborhood, are her happiest times. We're going to hook up with another basenji owner next weekend. I have a feeling she's going to love that.

The B I am fostering came with a de-stuffed…um...thing (I really couldn't tell you what it once was). When she doesn't get her way she will BAROOOOOO at us as loud as she can and then grab the stuffy and shake, shake, shake it and throw it in our general direction. If she could say "so there', I know she would.

You could also try the small RC cars. The B's really like it as well as this little helicopter thing I have. They also like my furry blue pig-but they can't have that one!!

@Gooby: When I walk Goober in the park I have to contantly correct him when he tries to eat goose poop. I trained him with a Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo doll. IMO, now would be a good time for Gooby and you to attend a Puppy Class. They will teach you commands like "leave it" and many more obedience commands followed up with a very high value treat. One much too yummy than that old goose poop! :)

:) For the most part the only toys that hold up in my house are kongs, the "plush" toys made for dogs who destroy do last for a few weeks, but thats about it. I get the "mean kitty" and "mad cow" dolls for them every so often, and there are these wabba toys that you can get that are made from recycled firehose material. They all have fun chewing and chasing these toys. I have a couple of "tough dog" toys that are sorta like fabric frisbees, that have lasted for almost a year! the squeekers have since died in both of them, but the pups still like to tug them around, and have me throw them. I keep a lot of recreational bones and such available in the house, and some cow hooves which take them awhile to chew on. But its hard to find good bones for them because they can not be beef. If I get them without any marrow, or any meaty material than we can have them, but otherwise we have to steer clear because my Masi is allergic to beef. So when I get marrow bones, I actually take all the marrow out, and wash the bones before they get them. It's sorta sad really, she loves them so much! kim~
