Senior day at the park.

    Well yesturday was a nice day here in new york so we decided to take our B to a nearby park that has an enclosed doggie area. Well we thought he was going to have a blast and there weren't too many dogs there so we thought even better. As soon as we came close, the barking stated and they all greeted Champ at the gate with the usual sniffing but then they lost interest. Champ tried to get them to play but to no avail. All the dogs were seniors and did not want to play. It was funny seeing our B scratch at them, jumpo on them and even nip at them but they had no interest in him whatsoever. Oh well better luck next time. This weekend I will be going into New york city for a basenji meet up and hope to have more luck with having some young playmates for Champ.

    @ukjason That's a good suggestion. I usually ask him to go fetch (or at least touch) the leash - still waiting for the leash to be brought back!!!! Then sit while I put it on. We can extend the session. Thank you.

    It all depends on how she was "down" for example a "crouching down" wit her body very low to the ground from head to tail & focusing on the other dog then I would say definitely pouncing position…but this could be puncing for play. My girl does this very often when she plays. If it's just down with her head up end front elbows on the ground then I would think she's just trying to send a signal...hey I don't mean any harm & I'm cool & calm :) part of their doggy language.

    When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference. I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention. Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want. I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.

    @jessi76: I used a dog daycare often when my dog was young, and still use it on occassion. I looked for the same things ChaseandZahrasmom's mentioned, but I also chose the one I use because it's the same place I train my dog. The staff in the daycare knew my dog from classes, they used the same training methods throughout the day (so it continually reinforced what we learned), and it was double fenced & gated… even inside. on my dog's first day he only had a human buddy all day. then on day 2 he got introduced to another dog, close in age/size/temperment. day 3 they added another friend. They kept a file listing his "friends" so the staff always knew what playgroup to put him in. They took special care during the cold months and rainy weather to keep him warm & dry. and they only crated for 1 hr during the work day. the place I use is $25/day, which to me and my budget is alot of money, but I also think it's a very fair price to pay for the quality of care my dog gets there, which is really most important. If you have multiple places to choose from in your area, I'd drop by un-announced, so you can see what a typical day is like. Showing up without an appointment sounds like a good idea. I didin't think about that. Thank you :)

    I just think that he's settling into your schedule. Dogs are creatures of routine. You may want to teach a "settle down" command for the weekend evenings, and of course, really tire him out during the day on the weekends. a really wiped out dog isn't going to want to play all night.
