Senior day at the park.

    Well yesturday was a nice day here in new york so we decided to take our B to a nearby park that has an enclosed doggie area. Well we thought he was going to have a blast and there weren't too many dogs there so we thought even better. As soon as we came close, the barking stated and they all greeted Champ at the gate with the usual sniffing but then they lost interest. Champ tried to get them to play but to no avail. All the dogs were seniors and did not want to play. It was funny seeing our B scratch at them, jumpo on them and even nip at them but they had no interest in him whatsoever. Oh well better luck next time. This weekend I will be going into New york city for a basenji meet up and hope to have more luck with having some young playmates for Champ.

    Well, I went to the dog park again. It was actually kinda boring. Only one other guy there with 2 little, shaved white dogs. He was not talkative at all and after the initial sniff, the dogs pretty much ignored on another. It was kinda hot (90 degrees) + humid + around dinner time so I wasn't really surprised. I was gonna leave when I, with the sun in my eyes, saw someone showing up with a dog with a curly tail and pointy ears. I thought, "OMG, is that a basenji, can't leave now." Turns out it was a Shiba-Inu. Cute dog. I thought, "Hey, maybe we'll get something here, playwise." No such luck, again, ignoring after the initial sniff. Oh well, it still made a tired basenji, which is good. I will go back again. Oh, and DolceMomma, this park also separates small and large. But the "large" dog area is so-o much nicer than the small dog area. First time, we started in the "small" dog area, alone, five minutes, went into the "large" dog area, 'cause that's where everyone else was. I just think this is a good way for my boy to get socialized. But I am/will be vigilant.

    I am sooo glad that you both had a successful day at the dog park. It's so important for dogs to be able to socialize well with other dogs. Well done!

    They just opened a new park built on a retired landfill that has not one but TWO areas for dog parks, so when one gets run down, they'll open the other and close the first to allow grass to regrow, etc. She-Ra loves it, too, because unlike the other parks this one is wide open and has TONS of running room. Dream come true for us, but it'll still get hot in the summertime, I'm sure.

    Basenjis often do best in the big dog section, (they are big dogs in small bodies) as long as the big dogs are nice. Glad you had such a good time, it is a joy to watch them run, and best of all…..a tired basenji is a GOOD basenji. One park we go to has a rule, no children under 8! Anne

    @Barklessdog: I went to a dog park near me once when our dog was a year old. When I let him off his leash he seemed confused and just walked by my side unleashed the whole time… I agree wholeheartedly. My MIL has a dog park by her house and we took Rocky there once or twice. But he to acted very different. At home (or at friends houses with enclosed yards) he goes Mach-5 and runs/leaps/bounces all over the place. At the dog park, he just trotted off about 15 feet away, checked out the direction of the wind, and trotted right back to me. And there he stayed. We even went at a time when there were fewer dogs, and the dogs there were all ones he knew. Go figure.
