Senior day at the park.

    Well yesturday was a nice day here in new york so we decided to take our B to a nearby park that has an enclosed doggie area. Well we thought he was going to have a blast and there weren't too many dogs there so we thought even better. As soon as we came close, the barking stated and they all greeted Champ at the gate with the usual sniffing but then they lost interest. Champ tried to get them to play but to no avail. All the dogs were seniors and did not want to play. It was funny seeing our B scratch at them, jumpo on them and even nip at them but they had no interest in him whatsoever. Oh well better luck next time. This weekend I will be going into New york city for a basenji meet up and hope to have more luck with having some young playmates for Champ.

    @ukjason That's a good suggestion. I usually ask him to go fetch (or at least touch) the leash - still waiting for the leash to be brought back!!!! Then sit while I put it on. We can extend the session. Thank you.

    Basenjis often do best in the big dog section, (they are big dogs in small bodies) as long as the big dogs are nice. Glad you had such a good time, it is a joy to watch them run, and best of all…..a tired basenji is a GOOD basenji. One park we go to has a rule, no children under 8! Anne

    I have flown with a dog of mine several years ago from England to USA. He was on as "extra" cargo. I had to pick him up at JFK and go through customes with the usual paperwork and check him in again at the ticket counter of my airline. I have also worked for a major airline and know that the pets are kept in a separate area and no hazardous items such as liquid oxygen are in the same hold as the animals. Most newer aircraft have that separate cargo holg heated as the air is very cold outside at cruising altitudes. I was extemely nervous and frank;ly scared about the flight but he did great. England has a six month quarantine but you allowed to visit your pet. I do agree with Pat…any way it is a tuff one for you...Good luck...

    My Basenji would never be able to do it. She loves to swim, but isn't that nice with other dogs. My Husky mix would totally love it though. :) We'd have to use a crane to get him back out. I have a "doggy swim day" almost everyday. The shelter I work with built a lake out back, and on the hot days we let all the dogs go play in it.

    My girl Lacie, does the exact same thing when we goto the dog park. My boy Ozzie will go explore a little bit and watch the other dogs play but not really get involved and he will always come back to me after a minute or two. We have only gone a couple of times but one time he finally got the urge to put him self out there and do his little sumo move and crouch down to play with this one dog, but sadly that dog wasn't interested.
