Senior day at the park.

    Well yesturday was a nice day here in new york so we decided to take our B to a nearby park that has an enclosed doggie area. Well we thought he was going to have a blast and there weren't too many dogs there so we thought even better. As soon as we came close, the barking stated and they all greeted Champ at the gate with the usual sniffing but then they lost interest. Champ tried to get them to play but to no avail. All the dogs were seniors and did not want to play. It was funny seeing our B scratch at them, jumpo on them and even nip at them but they had no interest in him whatsoever. Oh well better luck next time. This weekend I will be going into New york city for a basenji meet up and hope to have more luck with having some young playmates for Champ.

    I am sooo glad that you both had a successful day at the dog park. It's so important for dogs to be able to socialize well with other dogs. Well done!

    @Barklessdog: I went to a dog park near me once when our dog was a year old. When I let him off his leash he seemed confused and just walked by my side unleashed the whole time… I agree wholeheartedly. My MIL has a dog park by her house and we took Rocky there once or twice. But he to acted very different. At home (or at friends houses with enclosed yards) he goes Mach-5 and runs/leaps/bounces all over the place. At the dog park, he just trotted off about 15 feet away, checked out the direction of the wind, and trotted right back to me. And there he stayed. We even went at a time when there were fewer dogs, and the dogs there were all ones he knew. Go figure.

    My girl Lacie, does the exact same thing when we goto the dog park. My boy Ozzie will go explore a little bit and watch the other dogs play but not really get involved and he will always come back to me after a minute or two. We have only gone a couple of times but one time he finally got the urge to put him self out there and do his little sumo move and crouch down to play with this one dog, but sadly that dog wasn't interested.

    @jessi76: I used a dog daycare often when my dog was young, and still use it on occassion. I looked for the same things ChaseandZahrasmom's mentioned, but I also chose the one I use because it's the same place I train my dog. The staff in the daycare knew my dog from classes, they used the same training methods throughout the day (so it continually reinforced what we learned), and it was double fenced & gated… even inside. on my dog's first day he only had a human buddy all day. then on day 2 he got introduced to another dog, close in age/size/temperment. day 3 they added another friend. They kept a file listing his "friends" so the staff always knew what playgroup to put him in. They took special care during the cold months and rainy weather to keep him warm & dry. and they only crated for 1 hr during the work day. the place I use is $25/day, which to me and my budget is alot of money, but I also think it's a very fair price to pay for the quality of care my dog gets there, which is really most important. If you have multiple places to choose from in your area, I'd drop by un-announced, so you can see what a typical day is like. Showing up without an appointment sounds like a good idea. I didin't think about that. Thank you :)
