B's toys and kids

    Am I wrong to say kids should not play with your puppies toys? We don't have kids yet, and our pup is 8 months old. We have a friend, who brought over his 3 year old, and he's been around our pup before, but today the child decided to play with Mia's toys, which I knew was a bad idea. Mia kept jumping on the boy to try to get the toy, and my boyfriend was getting mad at me for not disciplining the dog, I mean we didn't let the dog maul the kid, but it's hard to hold her still when someone else is playing with her toys. Any suggestions on what to do when little kids are around?

    Put the toys away. That way they are not a problem for the dog nor the child. If the child needs some play time while they are visiting then that is a good time for the dog to have some crate chew time with an extra good crate chewie.

    good point in putting the toys away…but as far as the crate, I think my B is clostrophobic or something, because being enclosed freaks her out, which is weird because she was fine with the crate trainning at night when we first got her. Maybe I just give her too much the run of the house (although some parts of the house are gated and that's fine), and she thinks everything is hers. But from now on I will put her toys away if kids come over for a visit.

    If your dog doesn't like being crated then maybe creating a "safe place" for when kids visit that the dog can be where it can have some time away from the kids.

    My Basenjis have always loved radishes… I would start them young with them... just tossing them on the floor whole... they would roll and toss them around the floor and then finally biting into them... a couple of days of that, they were hooked... makes a great treat... but I did make sure they were a bit on the sweet side then the "hot" side

    Actually I have bought the muzzles in Austria at that shop: http://www.sofahund.at And yes, the dogs can open their mouths while running. This is the reason why I searched to find these muzzles. They also have the plastic-coated wire muzzles with the wire across the head. Regards, Esther

    My personal opinion is that if you don't set ground rules for both dogs, you will have a fight… each needs to respect the other and since Shango was there first, he should be greeted first... and Mowgli needs to learn to wait his turn. But first you will need to teach Mowgli some basic Obedience, like sit, down, stay.... You need to greet Shango first and have Mowgli wait.... if he buts in you need to put him back in a sit/stay until you are done with Shango and release Mowgli

    Lets hope that's not the case but you never know with a Tri :) I'll have a camera in one hand and a video recorder in the other just to make sure we capture everything. LOL

    Glad to hear the trip went well. I'm sure there are people on here that can tell you more, but Bs are about 17 inches at the shoulder. I use my crate all the time. Deke LOVES it. He'd rather sleep in there then with us! It's also his "safe" zone. I have two (human) girls 6 and 10 they are not allowed to bother him in there.. other kids that come over are also told to leave the him alone when in his crate. It is in our kitchen so he's always near us. He actually likes it covered(it's like a den), he's in it when ever we're not home and at night. When he goes to my parents it goes to and his bankets and the cover. He gets a treat most times he goes in. We trained him to go in with the command "crate" but "bed time" works at night. When he was little we just picked him up and put him in we said "crate, good boy" and gave him treats. He just learned to love it. Good Luck
