Basenji owner or breeder in Long Island, New York

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hi, Does anyone know a Basenji Breeder or individual owner in Long Island, New York ?
I have a gentleman wanting to purchase my last puppy, but the problem is one of his children has allergies. I would really feel better if he could take her around a Basenji to see how she will react before making a purchase and shipping the puppy.
Any help would be appreciated !!
    God Bless,
    Dee

  • I live in Queens New York, but I can take my B to Lond Island for a visit. If you want email me here or privatly or have the potential owner e-mail me. Long Island is pretty big but if the ride is not too long I don't mind. Or they can come by us and see what a nice B house looks like. (socks in the crate with holes, kids stuffed animals now his, no nice decorations on the table tops, plants up high).

  • Thanks so much!! I have sent you a PM. Michael should be contacting you soon.
    Thanks again for your help!!
    God Bless,
    Dee

  • Check for allergies - I put together a strange packet that can help. I take a Q-tip and swab the inside of the dogs mouth, then take a fine comb and scrape on the skin - trying to get some dander up. I put both items in a paper towel, and then a baggy I tell the folks to take the packet out of the bag and put it under the allerigic persons pillow. If they wake up and don't have watery eyes or a rash or something - they should be ok.

  • Another good way is to go for a car ride with a B or 2… windows up....

but that is a great idea, Diane.......

  • Am I the only one that absolutely loves the way they smell? from chris and tom on Cape Cod :)

  • I have to admit I love sniffing my B

I think that a basenji puppy and a two-year-old is a recipe for disaster for many reasons. Both require and crave lots of attention, neither one can be reasoned with, both will want to play with the same toy, both can be stubborn, and the list goes. It is far too much to expect a two-year-old to understand how to get along with any puppy, especially a basenji puppy. If your heart is set on a basenji puppy, then I think you should wait until your child is at least five or six years old.Children that age understand what you are saying about the puppy and you can explain to them why you are saying it. I agree with the person who suggested getting an older basenji or how about a puppy of another breed? t one time in my life I had a basenji and a mixed breed, and they got along beautifully. You may love all the traits of this breed but I was suggest that you talk to owners and their experiences with the basenjis and young children. One cannot count on even the best breeders to give you the full story. Please don't get me wrong. I've had three basenjis and adored them all. I got the first one when my youngest daughter was seven. You don't have to wait that long but two years old is too young, imho. Good luck.

Not too many responsible breeders in Fla... go to www.basenji.org and search by state. Note that Basenjis only come in season once a year and 99% of puppies are only born Nov/Dec/Jan, so you most likely will not find any pups this time of year

Big long "sighhhh". :( These dogs need to get into the BRAT system. Is anyone available to go and personally speak to who has the dogs now?
