Food decision

  • what do you feed for dry food?

my dog had major digestive problems with Nutro. digestive problems at BOTH ENDS! it wasn't pretty.

for wet food I really love Merrick. You can see the difference when you open the can.

  • I saw that at the pet store O.k. For dry food we were using iams until the scare (I didn't realize it did not include dry food ) so we started using the natural harmony also for the dry food. Merrick also has dry food do you use that also?

  • I had Duke on Nutro dry and Merricks dry and wet - I think he'll eat anything, but when I got Daisy our puppy last month, she came with Canidae, all life stage formula. It looks to have all good ingredients, (no corn meal). I've been feeding both dogs for about a month now with it. Most importantly for Daisy as she's not house trained so picking up the poop is a breeze (solid), when it's in the house. Duke & Daisy get 1/2 cup 3 x per day.

  • I have used Canidae for quite a few years and all mine do quite well on it… It is high on the list of good quality dog food.

  • Haven't seen that one. I'll look around.

  • I don't use the Merrick dry, but I certainly would, it's great food, IMO. I currently use Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken which is a lamb based kibble. I then add 2 scoops of Merrick canned in, mix up, and end up w/ one very happy, healthy, and content dog.

I've also heard good things about Canidae.

  • Innova is a good product, and they like it. My rule of thumb is " if it's on the supermarket shelf it's mass produced with cheaper ingredients so I don't buy it". I like IVD products (get at the vet) because there are no additives.

  • We feed our Bs Merricks dry and wet food. You can order online big bags of it…which makes it very convenient!!

Their wet food looks like human food...espeically their wingaling :D :D

  • I think I saw the Merricks at the pet store. Funny cause before our B I had a toy poodle (he's in doggie heaven now) and I used to feed him mighty dog for the whole 14 years of his life and here I am now asking for food advise for Champ. You live, you grow, you learn.

  • I have fed Iams or Eukanuba for my dogs/cats for 10 years. I had a dobie and a rot prior to my 2 now. I usually put a little sour cream in it to get them to eat it faster. I like the food. It is conveinint, not to expensive and they like it. Both dogs and cats haven't had any digestive problems on it. The recent recall was only on wet food, which you know already, but I have never fed that to any of the animals because I want to keep their teeth strong.

  • luzmery928, Nutro Max wet food is on the list of recalled foods. please do not feed it at ALL. Sorry it took me until now to realize that.

  • omg thanks..how dumb of me to not consider the fact that those idiots at the pet store would take them off the shelf. Thanks a million for this info.

  • i was so concerned about the recall when it first happened I took for granted checking the labels again.

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

The biggest difference in most puppy foods and small breed foods is the fat and protein contents. I have one that needs the higher calories found in the small breed and puppy foods. If he has a sensitive stomach then you will need to transition very slowly to any new food and he may not transition to a new food.

@Varanus: So I have Yoshi on Canidae All Life Stages right now, and I don't think it's the food for him. He's doing better on it than on the lower-meat-content Three Dog Bakery food I was using, but it isn't making him as happy and healthy as it could. For various reasons, I don't think I can do a raw diet right now, so I'm interested in kibble recommendations. I'm willing to spend money to get good food for him to thrive on, but I'm also not made of cash. Recommendations? B's are funny about there food, I only feed dry food and use Wellness brand, which has been good for my B's, Try a newpaper under the bowl so it wond shift around, that may help. If he hungry enough he will eventually eat. Good luck.

@Robin_n_Jack: I was having the same problem with Jack recently…he's 2...he wouldn't eat, I called it his anorexic phase. He would eat acouple of bites in the morning, ad about half of his food in the afternoon. There has been a lot of excitement around lately (Dad's home, and we are packing to move) so I thought that might have something to do with it, and I figured he would eat when he was hungry. He hasn't been acting lethargic or sick, just not eating. Finally, after trying everything I could think of, treats in with the food (worked for a little while) pretending to eat it my self and trying to hand feed him(he looked at me like "If you think it is so good, why don't you eat it?) this morning I mixed some water in with the food. Next thing I know, it was all gone. Yay! no more Ally McBeal doggie! Glad to hear that he is eating again. :-) I think we all know what its like to worry that your B isn't eating enough.

Yeah, Jack is like that with broccoli- when he sees me pulling it out of the fridge to cook for me, he gets all excited and trembly with anticipation. He immediately sits and watches until he just can't stand it anymore and then he's HANGING TEN COUNTER SURFING!!!!!!

I have now switched from Blue Buffalo food to Merricks wet and dry. The Blue Buffalo was hard to get, I had to buy it out of town. I get Merricks locally, and Sahara absoutely eats it better than all the rest. She is a picky eater and doesn't have a big appetite, but man oh man is she waiting when it is meal time now. She cleans her dish, a new thing for her. I am very happy, I use the dry also with about 1/4 cup of wet mixed in. I add alittle warm water to the dry (it makes it's own gravy) heat the wet alittle and add to the dry. Yes, I know Sahara is spoiled b/c I heat her wet food but what the heck, she is worth it, only takes a few seconds. Merricks is pricey $2 per can but I make it last for about 4-5 meals. Anyways, if you read the can and bag of the dry you will see what I mean, it is very good dog food and the family that has the company has been in business for 3 decades.
