Bad dog!

    When we got Dash a friend of ours came to see him and fell in love. He loved his personality and independence. He tried to find an older one to rescue but because he had never owned a B before he was turned away. We told him he could babysite Dash while we went to Chicago for the weekend. We thought he may be getting in over his head as we were learning all of Dashy's little "traits".
    Dash is crated when we are not home and he was our only dog. He hated that crate. Anyway, after we left, our friend obviously thought Dash would not mind being let out after work and then put back in his crate while he went out for the evening. WRONG! Our B ate his way out of the crate. Sqeezed through the tiniest spot to escape, ripped down and destroyed his blinds and peed and pooped on the floor. I can't remember if he did anything else or not. That is all I remember.
    He got home really late that night and called us in Chicago. Ernesto (my boyfriend) and I were laughing so hard. "That's our boy!, he needs your attention and exercise and if you don't give it to him he will create his own. Welcome to our world!".
    Needless to say, he decided to wait on a B until he was a little more settled. He still wants one but it was a wake up call. As for our little one. We take him to the dog park as often as possible to stretch his legs and we got a second dog and that has made a huge difference with his separation anxiety. He has a large run in the basement now with his sis and they keep each other company and we have not had any problems. Over the last 2 years he has been the best dog we could ask for and he certainly keeps us on our toes.

    That's a great story. I tell you that more and more I find myself mentioning to pple that don't know about B's (most pple don't) that our dog is not like other's. They look at me like yeah right whatever that's what we all say. So it's great to come to this forum and hear stories like this when ppl get to see for themselves that our little angels can also be little devils. We have pple come to our home all the time that think they can "tame" Champ and after 45min. thery'e like see that's all he needs, to be shown whose boss. We're like yeah then how come you're all nipped up, sweating and my B is now worn out and sleeping on your lap.

    Every perspective basenji owner should "dog sit" a b for the weekend. What a great idea you had to "educate" your friend!!

    Unfortunantly I wouldn't leave my B was too many ppl. Some of there advise is to beat him once with shoe, broom, whatever, and they won't do it again. Nope they will have to educated right in front of his mommy and daddy.

    That is a great idea, but it should be an adolescent for sure (seems to be the most trying stage). My mom also really liked our dog (the look, the no bark, typical things most people like) and she quickly changed her ideas. We were telling her about the time we had to babysit another dog and the things she did to let us know that she did not like another dog in our house (she did some very naughty things)! My mom said 'wow she is really a manipulating dog'. I said, yeah they are definately not a breed for everyone.

    Jaycee digs same way but she does somersaults head down over she gos first time neighbor saw it they could not beleive it. I think neighbor came over every day for a week waiting to see it again and Jaycee would do it. Yes I very much second that digging usually will cause the great B-500. Rita Jean

    When Cory and Jayden get into something special (in their eyes) that they suspect they aren't supposed to have, they go and hide in a chair so they can examine it and chew it in private. There is no "Let's go show Mom!". Often Cory will rat Jayden out. She will make such a fuss that I've learned to recognize her "tattling" ruckus. If I want to get on the computer, I have to secure them in the room with me or put them outside. If not, Jayden WILL find something for them to get into. He is tall for a basenji and I swear he can use his front paws like hands! Pat

    Sahara does the same, she will stick her head through just enough to see you and then helps you get dry by licking. She loves to help out, and will take a bath pretty easy now. Daddy also took her with him to shower and she did good. We have also taken her in our boat with a lifepreserver of course and she liked it ok. Hubby put her in the river with him and she was fine with him. Yea, they do have the sweetest personalities, and we love our Sahara sooooooo much.

    Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.

    When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference. I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention. Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want. I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.
