Kennels near SW Ohio?

Basenji Talk
  • We're planning a trip this fall and considering boarding the Bs in a kennel. They're 1 1/2 and, since I work from home, aren't use to being crated all day. We found a couple college students who could stay at our house, but my concern is they will be in and out a lot and there is there are WAY too many rules and routines right now – going outside (especially when wet or just tired), routine when leaving, keeping the house Basenji-proof, keeping the front door CLOSED at all times, etc. The kennel seems like the safest option -- the critters will be safe and the house as we left it. I called our vet to get some recommendations, but wondering if anyone has others (not sure if there are any SW Ohio people on here). I plan to visit a couple. Thanks

The Tampa Humane Society became a "no kill" shelter a couple of years ago, so all strays, etc now go to Animal Control. I have been called by the Humane Society (gave them my name and number before BRAT existed) to pull several basenjis, one turned out to be a really cute mix, over the last 6 years, but for them rescue is a last resort, they prefer to adopt dogs out themselves. In the past, Animal Control has called rescue groups for all purebreed dogs, but even so, I don't doubt that basenjis have fallen through the cracks, or were deemed unadoptable (bite history, aggression, injured). But this quote is from a Hillsborough County Animal Control person about the St. Pete SPCA, who also does work with rescue. Again, it could be true, but we are talking about 3 different facilities, St. Pete SPCA, Tampa Humane Society, and Animal Control, all of whom euthanized till recently.

My other alternative was to have my dad stay at our house for a week, but we ran into the similar issues - so many rules to explain. In doing some research online, I also found this site www.abka.com. It's for the American Boarding Kennel Association - this is how we found the kennel we chose. It's a good resource. I also recall reading something online about how it's safer for them to be at kennel than to have a friend or family member watch them. Just imagine if the dog ran out and got loose - a pet sitter would have a very hard time dealing with that. If they are in a kennel, they are secure, safe and well taken care of. I'm leaving better about our decision to do this, but I know I'm going to cry! :)
