  • @rachael Well, if your breeder didn't follow the proper protocol of giving you a copy of the signed agreement and document explaining the endorsement stipulation at the time of purchase, then technically you could challenge it with the KC. You certainly could make your case with them. Whilst the thought of any KC lifting breeder endorsements makes me slightly uneasy, I do hear & understand your fear that these puppies wouldn't have that safety net of registration. Have you mentioned having already medically screened your male basenji to his breeder? Perhaps that could be helpful in persuading him to lift the endorsement. I would certainly reach out in a follow up with the breeder to try and resolve the unfortunate situation. This "mismate" is a misstep, and I would hope the puppies wouldn’t in any way suffer because of it. I agree with @elbrant Post the coming details here. I'm glad to know you won't post them on the free placement sites. Those can be terribly dodgy. Please keep the community here abreast of your situation as potential puppy parents will see this post, and you could help a future someone out who might have this exact issue.
I hope I've been a bit of help.

  • The only person that can remove endorsements is the breeder; Kc has no say in removing the endorsement if the breeder wants to keep them up

  • @Éilis . Thank you. I've screened both mom and dad for PRA and fanconi. Both clear. My first basenji died of fanconi, so I know what an awful disease it is. I've also done a coefficient test. It's 0.5%. To be honest, although this wasn't meant to happen. I know that these pups will be of outstanding temperament. I will offer lifelong support for all pups and happily take them back, if it doesn't work. I've got 2 ladies interested one already has a B, so she knows all about them and the other has extensively researched, thank you all, for your help. I'm hoping that a few more people, from this site will register interest

A quick google search would provide this nuanced answer:
"Any endorsement may be lifted only with the permission in writing of the endorser or of a person with due authority from the endorser (in the event the endorser cannot give permission due to death or incapacity) or by resolution of the Kennel Club Board."

This is a resource for inquiring about making your request to the KC:
    https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/forms/application-to-lift-or-place-an-endorsement/

@rachael Again, I would continue an honest dialogue with your male's breeder, and see if you can come to a resolution together. At least try to reach out once more as you never know. Perhaps agreeing to contractually neuter your male to ensure a mis-step will never occur again could help this outcome.
These endorsements are in place for so many important reasons to protect the breed; not least to safeguard from unplanned puppies or BYB.
I'm hoping for the best outcome for these puppies.
And of course, do keep the forum abreast of the situation, and the details of the forthcoming litter. I'm sure you can find great placements on this forum.
    Wishing you the best!

Great advice... perhaps the males breeder could offer insights into breeding and information on preparing the pups for their new homes. (?) Just thinking that they may be more invested in relinquishing the endorsement if they have a hand in the outcome... or, perhaps, pick of the litter.

  • Update! Puppies are here. 4 girls, 2 boys. Mom and babies, all doing well

  • YAY!!! (please share pics as soon as Mom lets you)

  • @elbrant . Thank you. I'm so proud of her. She did so well. We didn't need to do a thing. Did it all by herself. All arrived healthy and seem to be doing well. I've tried to upload a pic, she's really chilled with us all. I'm a technophobe. Will try and figure it out

(note: I have not tested these on a mobile phone... theoretically, they should work the same way.)

  • @elbrant . Thank you will try on my laptop. Whilst writing, can anyone point me in the right direction, regarding supervising. I didn't sleep at all last night. I'm sleeping in the same room with Ada and pups. I'm frightened to go to sleep, but obviously I can't go all week, with no sleep. Will she be OK with them? If I snatch 40 winks? Thank you

  • @rachael Congratulations! Happy to know all is going well. What a beautiful early christmas gift. x

@senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@matt_dl That is good to hear ! I think there are puppies in the North of UK. The demand last year meant some people bred imported dogs to get on the band wagon, maybe. Anyway there are many first time breeders with possible un-health tested breeding pairs. Do make sure the parents are health test by OFA for Fanconi and PRA at the very least. And that they are registered with our Kennel Club.

Email me privately. Address in websites in signature block. I have had in excess of 100 enquiries since lockdown. The world has gone mad for puppies of all breeds. You are unlikely to find one this breeding season. Some breeders are already filling up lists for spring of 2022. Your research will have shown you that Basenjis are once a year girls. In the northern hemisphere this means most of them whelp around November or December

@debradownsouth He was Arrested and then he died. I will refrain from posting Horse related posts. You just did not believe me when I said Horses are taken to Great Adventure. Now regarding the Basenjis relation to Wolves: Mu dog loved the Wolves and when I would walk the Wolf and the Dog in the Park the Dogs there which included Rotties, Saint Bernards, Bull Mastiffs all pulled their owner out of the Park because Dogs instinctively fear Wolves. Thannks!

Yes i have been very interested for a long time. Iv been in contact with a Breeder from England for a while now and they are expecting a summer litter. While iv been speaking to the breeder i feel comfortable that she will be more than helpful and is willing to all of the above. Like you said the price was the last thing on your mind, this goes for me too. I was just wondering along the lines so i could save to buy my puppy. Thanks for the help :)
