My 7 months basenji whimpered in the middle of the night for the first time...any ideas why?

Hi guys,
Wondering if you have any idea why my little basenji woke up in the middle of the night randomly. He is now sound asleep at my feet (it's 3am here).
He started to wimper and so I went downstairs to check and I find out he needs to go to the toilet. So I took him outside and then put him back to sleep in his crate. However he started to wimper again and so I went back downstairs with my pillow and duvet and now he is sleeping near my feet.
My basenji loves his crate and he sleeps in there, he knows that's his bed but today he randomly whimpered. He doesn't usually wake up at night and sleeps through the night.
He seems to be okay now at my feet...

@little_t
You need to put his crate in your bedroom @ night. He wants to be with you. ️ -
@kembe which I don't mind but he likes being downstairs and we've never really had a problem until now.....so I am thinking it maybe something else?
-
Agree, crate should be in your bedroom at night. They want to be near their people.

A puppy whimper is a call for it's family. And that means, you. Put the crate in your bedroom. Better yet, let the pup sleep next to you in your bed. Not only will you both get a much better night's sleep, your family will bond and you will reduce separation anxiety.

this might be different than what you're describing but my B puppy would randomly scream in the middle of the night, in my bed. It was a jarring scream rather than a whimper. It hasn't happened for months now ... growing pains?
-
@beth314 aahh I never thought of that, now thinking of it it could be that!

or you rolled over on the pup.... it happens.

@beth314 - Have to say, disagree with that idea
-
@tanza what idea??
-
@little_t I've never had a B whimper in a crate in another room because... I'm one of those demented unclean people that lets their B sleep "In" the bed. Not on the bed. In the bed. As in under the covers if they want. We're just a pack of filthy animals sharing chunks of dirt and fleas. I LOVE IT!
Anyway... mine whimper from time to time. They even bark in their sleep! If they carry on for more than about a minute I pet them to reassure them. That usually settles them down right away. If not, I talk to them and that always does the trick.
I get why people have their dog sleep in a crate. No judgement here. I'm just not one who does it, so I don't have much to offer other than get their crate a little closer to you.

@beth314 - growing pains... never had that ever in 30+ years
-
@jengosmonkey - My Basenji's crates are in our bedroom... they choose to sleep in their crates with the doors open... their choice unless they are not feeling well then they come in bed if they want
-
If your feet give reassurance and comfort, that is the place for the Basenji to sleep !
I am a day out out hospital after some rather complicated surgery but although my boys slept with Paul while I was away, last night they were both back in their usual places - at my feet and behind my knees - taking up more than 2/3 of the bed. . .
