San Francisco Puppies?

Moved Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Great to meet other "pittsburgh-ers" here! I grew up there, but now live in San Francisco. Curious if anyone has information on IRINA RASKOPINA as a breeder? I'm looking for a basenji pup as well, and she still lists as available (although likely I'm too late for this season as you have noted)

  • @rk66 - Looks like the dam is not DNA tested? The sire has not been either... I don't know and have not heard of this breeder and I am in Northern Califonia? You might want to ask other Basenji breeders in Southern California if they know of this person. You can find So. California breeders at www.basenji.org (Parent Basenji Club of America). Note that breeders that are shown on AKC site pay to be on that site, they do not have to supply any information, just pay the fee. You could also ask for references to people that have purchased puppies from them. The ad she has on the AKC site if you look at it, there are red "X" on the breeder profile as opposed to green check marks...

  • @tanza thanks for the advice!

  • Hi,
I would definitely do homework to make sure you get a pup who is test and had their parents tested for the different kinds of PRA blindness, Fanconi syndrome, & hips. Etc. I am in the San Fran area and in the past looked into Jasiri Sukari Basenjis in Southern CA. They are very reputable and have healthy tested pups. As for Basenji.org, it is hit or miss. Before I got my current pup I visited a couple different breeders from the site and one was clearly doing it only for the money only as the mother dog was not in good shape and needed better care. I was pressed to write a check immediately and they didn’t bother to ask about my home or if I knew about Basenjis at all. So -definitely do your homework it’s so worth it. Good luck.

  • @adina - Are you sure you are talking about the correct site? I know all of the breeders in California that are listed? Were you referring to maybe the AKC.org site? There are a number of questionable breeders listed there. Note however that both sites people pay to be listed, but for the Basenji Club of America, they must be a member of the parent club. Not so with AKC if you look at some of the listings there is a "breeder profile" that will show "Red X" or "green check mark" that responsible breeders at the very least should be doing.

  • Hi Tanza,

Yes, I’m sure. I am sure there are a lot of great folks there too. As with anything, it requires due diligence.

    Best,
    Adina

@tanza yes, but Lovebird of the Congo, sadly, only had one litter and then succumbed to a car racing on country lanes so we never knew if she would come in in Autumn next time around. I always figure to get a rest through end of March to May/June from entering litters born during our winter into the d/b before the Australians start whelping and registering their 'winter' litters, born in our summer - sorry electrician working and he turned the power off at the mains . . . where was I ? OK, back on again. Some revert, some don't. Again, its the rich tapestry of Life With Basenjis !

Apparently, because of the pandemic, puppies and kittens are in short supply everywhere, and since female basenjis generally only have one litter a year, you might have to wait even longer. The theory behind the shortage of puppies and kittens (and even older dogs and cats) is that because of lockdowns, etc people are lonely for companionship.

Hi Patty, Linda own's both Rosie's sire and dam. However, I am the cobreeder, and I was there for her dam's birth, shepherded her to her reproductive vet appointments, and I own Rosie's aunt and great uncle. I participate con several other basenji lists that were active long before this forum so that usually takes up all my free posting time. :p. I currently have a pack of four, including Rosie's brother Ra. My oldest dog Nut is not a basenji, but was adopted as a rescue and was a lonely 9 month old only dog until she was six months old and Rosie's great uncle Khonsu came home as a nine week old puppy. They got along beautifully, and still do. Three years later, Khonsu's niece and Rosie's aunt Jane camecto live with us. While she was still a puppy, she and Nut got along, but once she matured the household tension started. They have had several blood letting fights, and I'veclearned how to manage the household without running two packs, but it is NOT easy, and I cannot recommend it unless the people involved are completely dedicated to making it work. Where two or more boys can get along, often two bitches are not a good pairing; they can really hold a grudge. Breaking up a dog fight is no fun, and I've got the scars to prove it. If Greg and Lisa want a companion for Rosie, I'm all for it when she gets to be 6 months to a year old. Then she will have bonded well with everyone in their family, and will be less likely to bond more with another dog than with the humans. She will be approaching adolescence, and they can do a better job of selecting a suitable lifetime companion for her and their family. Katy Scott
