Vet in the Los Angeles area?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hey All -

Planning on bringing home my first basenji later this month (!) and have started to prepare. I asked the breeder if she knew of any great vets, as I hear not every veterinarian understands how unique basenjis can be. That said, I was wondering if anyone knew of any veterinarians in the LA area that work well with basenjis? The recommendation she gave me is unfortunately not accepting new patients but if anyone has suggestions, that’s would be great!

  • You might want to join FB groups and ask Vets in the LA area to assist. Did the breeder not give you any other Vets? And did the Vets you contacted were not able to give you referrals? If not also you might start calling Vets in your area and asking questions.... vets should be interviewed as so should breeders.

    Congrats on your new basenji!
A vet that has basenji experience is not as important as a vet that you can communicate well with, is willing to work with you and learn about basenjis.
You can get specific basenji advice from the breeder.

Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.

Hey Terry! I'm excited to know Jojo is coming home on Sunday!! Can't wait to meet her. I take Hollie to Callahan Drive Animal Hospital off I-75 North in Knoxville. I have seen two vets there. Dr. James Hilla, DVM is the head vet/owner and Dr Alisha Harbin. They were both thorough with the exam(s) and clearly communicated things to me. They treated me and Hollie exactly like I wanted us to be treated. I too, had been searching for the right vet(s). I think I have found them!!! They also seem to have basenji expereince. They commented on how calm Hollie was to be a basenji mix. Check out their website, here's the link, http://www.callahandriveanimalhospital.com/default.php Good luck and let me know when Jojo is ready for visitors!!
