Looking for a puppy

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hi there , we have been looking for a Basenji pup , preferably a male . Every link we are directed to has been unsuccessful. Please can anyone advise? I am in the uk 🇬🇧. Many thanks in advance

  • Hi to all. Same for me. Although i know most are going to breed shortly in the northern hemisphere, waiting lists arent easy to be included in...

  • In the US it is suggested that you contact breeders (would same for the UK) and develop a relationship with a breeder that you are both OK with each other... and you most likely need to be OK with waiting for the next breeding season since Basenjis are typically only born once a year... In the US you can contact with responsible breeders at www.basenji.org and search by state.

  • @liz-falzone Not sure if you are one of the 60 or so would-be Basenji puppy purchasers who has emailed me privately - PC is in the hospital and I am working on my laptop so can't access the list.

But that alone does tell you a great deal ! I haven't bred a litter for 12 years now but am still getting enquiries - current breeders are also inundated. We have been weeding through enquirers, putting many people off this challenging breed if they should perhaps look elsewhere, and filling lists of known 2020 winter breeders. Many have been accepting visitors and establishing a relationship. And have closed lists.

But breeders this winter seem to be holding their cards close to their chests, Rescues have been rehomed and Breed Clubs don't have many intended pairings listed.

I may be able to help but need to know a great deal more about you - location, knowledge of the breed, children, working from home etc. My email addresses are on the websites listed in my signature bloc

Hello, go to www.basenji.org and search for breeders... by state and there are some from Canada... you are most likely looking at possible breedings for fall/winter of 2020. Note however it is IMPORTANT that you go to a responsible breeder so registration papers are important as many BYB's use other types of registrations that are not registered by AKC or the Canadian Kennel club and you need to follow up on health testing youself... if they are doing responsible health testing before breeding the results are public at www.ofa.org. This is important in order to find a responsible breeder... that health tests before breeding here is a link on how to find and interview and find a responsible breeder... and this is important...https://www.basenji.org/learn/ScreeningBreeders.htm

Glad things are settling down for you. Now is a great time to get on breeders puppy lists. Go to the Basenji Club and contact breeders in states close enough for traveling to. If you're interested in a bit older, be sure to ask if they have any or know of another breeder who may have gotten a puppy back that didn't work out. Good luck in your search.

It depends on the breeder. I come from Rottweiler breeding background... we expose puppies to loud noises, really loud, uneven sources, temp changes, etc etc. Getting one at 8 wks, start off slow. I am sort of shaking my head... grew up around hunters and dogs and none cared... but that was the norm. I did find what looks like a reasonable article that might help. Also, I know you are set on a male... but have you considered an older rescue? Brat, CampBasenji and other rescues might have the perfect dog for you if no puppies are available. Otherwise, be prepared to get on waiting lists for next year. http://www.thesportsmanchannel.com/2012/05/how-to-introduce-your-dog-to-gunfire/

@Janneke: I would just LOVE LOVE LOVE to add a Basenji, but I study.. I would like to have some time off when the new pup is here, so it should come here like.. NOW (my vacation of 9 weeks just started :D).. Haha.. As we all now, B's get puppies when I'm in the middle of my 'school year'.. Ugh.. I have some nice breeders on my list :D ;) Your Shmi is also from Sweden right? Tillo is as well :) But we are going very 'off topic' in Fibula's thead. Sorry for that Fibula!! Yes, sorry :) Janneke - I wrote on your wall…
