Might be a basenji

Member Introductions
  • Hi, I have been struggling to determine if our pound puppy is a basenji, and in trying to post my photos here, please let me know how, rather than an attachment. how do i get them into the message like everyone else has? thanks, debbi

  • Hi debbiesam, Welcome to Basenji Forums!

We have corrected your thread in the "Show Off Your Dog" topic so the attched photos show up inside your posts.
In future you can that yourself by licking on the "paperclip" icon when creating a new thread or editing your post.

You can also find more info here: Picture Help: How to resize and add pictures to your post

    Hope this helps

  • Save your photo to a free site like Shutterfly. Open up the picture in Shutterfly, right click and select properties. Copy the link listed.

Come back to the Basenji Forum, Create a message, select the icon in the new message above that looks like some mountains with a son.

You will see a window open up that says Explorer user panel, put your copied link in there and hit ok, that will put your picture into your message.

I just figured this out last night, there is a post from Admin that tells you how to do it but I am not computer savy so it took me a while to figure it out! LOL!

  • Debbi - Welcome to the Forum. It is a great place to learn about this amazing breed. I saw your little Miss Dixie in the Show Off thread. She looks very much Basenji - she is very cute.

  • Welcome to the forum. It's so much fun and lots of great information. She's just adorable!

@allyn said in Basenji mix?: Meanwhile I know that like a Basenji, he should never be off leash, and we always need to make sure the gate is securely shut, I have had Basenjis for a long, long time now. I have always let them run off lead in the woods away from traffic. They have all been taught - and I have had up to eight at a time although am now down to one, soon to be two (!) - to return to me if I whistle. Basenjis CAN be taught to run free and to obey commands. Yes, gates should be kept shut, tightly, at all times. But away from traffic, they can be trained to behave and allowed to run free. I have bought a puppy sling for my new boy so I can take him to the woods with Hoover, and let him meet lots of people and thoroughly socialise until he has had his shots. I don't intend to deprive Hoover of her freedom just because of the puppy. He will learn to walk on a leash but mostly he'll be the hunter nature intended him to be.

Hi there. I would do some DNA testing on him. However, if you go to the Colorado Basenji Rescue website, there is a mix at the bottom of the page. There appears to be some similarities. You could also email Peggy of CBR with your photos and ask her. She has been working with Basenji and Basenji mixes for a long, long time.

Yes to the suggestions to get her checked and also spay her. Aggression may not necessarily be vicious but rather reaction to the scary situation she encountered. It can be dealt with through consistent and regular training (with treats to start) - you might try the Fenzi Dog Academy online classes (they have a great class for retraining reactive dogs). But regardless you need to be more aware of her surroundings and not put her in a situation that may be scary to her or at least get her attention back on you (treats) when you can't avoid the situation.

It was actually the vet tech wasn't the most brilliant thing on the planet… needless to say I found another vet the next week and they think she might have some bulldog in her... what a mix. I believe that she definitely could have some bulldog in her judging by the way she lays around the house.

i found the only thing that gets Sandies attention now days is a rolled news paper… i dont hit her with it, just the site of it and me slapping it against my legg, usually makes her stop what ever she is doing...usually its nothing major... chasing the cats...or if she just wont stop beating me up after we play...
