Pacific Northwest Breeders

Breeder Talk

  • My husband and I decided it was time to expand our family, and are wanting to get a basenji. I have been having a hard time finding breeders near me. Being in the pacific nw, I thought there would be at least a few in either Seattle or Portland. I am only coming across a few and the contact has been touchy. What are your suggestions? Any breeders out this way to recommend?

  • You can search for breeders by state at www.basenji.org and/or try Evergreen Basenji Club http://evergreenbasenjiclub.org. There are a number of breeders in the PNW. Keep in mind that most all Basenjis are born this time of year and responsible breeders typically have reservations lists before the pups are born

  • @dombrowskym There are actually a lot over there, I know because I have been looking for a girl for over a year in the north east. Everything I see is either mid south or pacific north west.

  • We got our wonderful basenji who just turned 1 in Dec from Khanis basenjis in SE Portland. She does allow you to go visit and see the dogs and ask any questions. Last year we got to play with about 15 puppies it was great
She does show her dogs so her reply may not always be quick

@cheryl-goodman - Have you talked to your girl's breeder? Have you completed all health testing and recorded it with www.offa.org as public record, especially DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA? Have you done any showing or performance events with your girl?

We were saddened and disappointed in our visit there. It was our first exposure to the Breed unfortunately. We are working with Robyn and a reputable breeder in South Georgia currently. We are hopeful for a match with a young adult Or teen. Thanks for your input.

Average litter size is 4 to 6… for Basenjis... My litters were 6,4,4, and 4 As lvoss pointed out there are other threads of the heartbreak that breeding can bring... along with the cost.... Again if really interested in breeding, get involved with the breed first.... find a mentor, go to shows just to watch, go to lure trials,... join a regional club if there is one in your area. For a real learning experience, go to the Nationals...

Yes, Arlene, you do need at some point to take a stand and trust what you see and what you like… Breeding comes down to that in the end.... And with a bitch that is only 1 1/2 yrs looking down from the top is not a very good judge... IMO... reason?... They are not mature yet... and they shouldn't be.... their ribs have not even "sprung" at this age.. again IMO.... I would be hard pushed to say a dog is "wider" in the front then the rear at this age by just looking down on them.... again IMO.... Here is a link to 3 pictures of Kobey, 6wks, 3 months and 5 1/2 months... everything I saw on this pup at 6 wks that I liked (and that is a bit early then the 8 wks usually used for evaluating pups) I still see... but there are differences while growing... Now granted this pup is one of the few that has yet to really fall apart with a growing spurt... And also the faults that I saw at 6wks are still there too..... www.tanzabasenjis.net/kobeygrowing.html

@khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
