My sweet Stella

The ground sniffing is a Basenji trait - has to smell and investigate everything.they are also very fast - my basenji caught 2 squirrels while on a leash (in her younger days).

  • @kembe That is definitely my Stella. I've never seen anything like it.

I need to post some pictures and videos that show the sides of her body.
I'm so happy to have her in our life!
    Thank you!

  • There was always some bone of contension - are Basenjis scent hounds or sight hounds ? Over here they used to be permitted to compete in both categories. Don't know if that is still the case cos am so far away from the showing scene these days.

I know mine quarter the ground properly like scent hounds, have done for generations. Chezz used to be particularly good at that. (Grandmother of the current two.) Squirrels used to be Mom Trouble's favourite prey but Ziggy also caught quite a few in her prime. Rabbits too.

Certainly it is no cause for worry or alarm. Rest assured - it is perfectly normal Basenji behaviour

  • She looks basenji to me. DNA test would help. She is lovely. :)

  • Are the DNA tests expensive? I would love to have her tested.
From all the pictures of Basenji's that I've seen, and so many of the behavior characteristics I've read about match hers, I think she has some degree of Basenji.
Her facial structure isn't as 'pointy' as the ones I've seen - Stella has a more pronounced jawline, and she appears a bit taller than most I've seen too.
I'm so happy to have her as part of our family!
    Thanks everyone!

  • Most run around $100. The Wisdom Panel Health is very comprehensive, but if you just want breed info, the 4.0 is great.

  • She has the markings of a basenji. Our Bolt has a square blocky head like your Stella. He is 3/4 African, and all basenji. He is also rather large at 36 pounds. He is not over-weight either. He's just really big. The best way to tell is a DNA test. Make sure that the test includes basenji, at one time not all of them did.

  • Ok. that sounds reasonable for a DNA test. I'm curious what percentage of Basenji she is, but I doubt I'll actually do the test because it doesn't really matter. I love her so MUCH and from everything I've read and from all of you (great posts by the way) she's at least part Basenji.

My silly Stella can always be found sniffing around in the kitchen when we're cooking, which brings me to ask- is that a Basenji trait, always begging when there is food? or is that just Stella.
She loves taking my napkins or kleenex and tearing them to shreds.
She has such personality! she does love to jump up in the air when she knows she's going out and she loves to run as fast as she can.
Do they like to swim? I haven't had her in the water yet.

Now THAT is definitely a Basenji trait !

  • LOL and she can't get enough of outdoor trashcans and dumspters!
    nose to the ground. always.

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

@elbrant Yes, she's good an patient sometimes, I've been taking pics of her from day 1 so she's used to it, I'm allowed a couple of mins and no more though.

Nice looking dog! I'm tempted to get another too once Safi is a bit older.

@Shaye's: He has such a loving expression in his eyes - he must love you much as you love him - beautiful boy. I hope so ;) He sure is, he loves every living animal and human so much… (only people that smoke, he doesn't like... )
