• Hi Everyone,

We are looking for a pure basenji puppy. He will be our family dog. If you know any reputable person in the southern California area please let me know.

  • You should start with the basenji club page... but hopefully someone here will know if there are puppies still available. Many litters already have every pup ready for a home. If you are willing to take an older puppy, sometimes show prospects don't work out and need rehoming. Look to the left and click on what states are doable for you.

  • Most pups have been spoken/have reservations, but contact the breeders in So. Cal from the link Debra gave you.

  • Two of the breeder have responded. One all the pups are spoken for and the other doesn't know yet. Hopefully, we can find one. We are so excited and hopeful to be adding one to our home.

  • My only concern is that we go camping and shooting often. How hard would it be to get him to adjust to the sound of a gun going off vs. training a puppy to get used to the sound.

If a puppy, be careful of the age. You do not want to try to introduce the sound of firearms during a fear period. For an older pup (and there is more than one fear period) or an adult, I would say condition the animal to accept a distant sound and gradually (watching his comfort level) get closer by degrees until hopefully he can handle it close up.

  • It depends on the breeder. I come from Rottweiler breeding background... we expose puppies to loud noises, really loud, uneven sources, temp changes, etc etc. Getting one at 8 wks, start off slow. I am sort of shaking my head... grew up around hunters and dogs and none cared... but that was the norm. I did find what looks like a reasonable article that might help.

Also, I know you are set on a male... but have you considered an older rescue? Brat, CampBasenji and other rescues might have the perfect dog for you if no puppies are available. Otherwise, be prepared to get on waiting lists for next year.
