Did I make a good switch - Pet Cueran to Blue Buffalo

Basenji Feeding
  • I just recently switched my girls food from Pet Curean Now Fresh sm.breed to BLUE Buffalo Wilderness Salmon adult dog. was this a good switch for my girl ,or should I return the bag and get the Sm.breed wilderness option
Or the "small bites" BLUE Wilderness chicken recipe.
She eats it now but we've gone from 3 cups to 2 only , could this be due to the kibble size ?
also I was feeding her more before to up her weight a bit , she's at a hefty 18lbs now ! 5 more to go!!

  • I feed based on the calorie count of each food, there is great variability! Anywhere from 350 to 600 calories per cup. A 'better' quality food often requires less volume as it is nutrient-dense. It may not be on the bag, you may have to go to the website and search for that info. I found several charts for recommended calories per day for dogs and I use that as a guide. All mine are on the 'normal to weight loss, older, low activity' scale so they don't get much to eat!

We switched to Fromms last year and all 3 of mine are doing well on it, but I think BB Wilderness is a good quality food as well.

  • Mine didn't like FROMM so much if you can believe it ! And she only gets about 1 and 1/3 cup a day now

  • mine get a cup a day of Fromm, was feeding taste of the wild previously. Blue Buffalo gave mine loose stools, but never tried the salmon as none of mine will eat fish versions of any food, it has to be chicken

  • Mine get Fromm as well, but only 1/2 a cup. I do mix it up with other grain free, so they are always on different brands of dry food. I never have to worry about switching foods as they are used to changes.

  • Ive been reading reviews and the vet did tell me that she looks great :) coat and condition and she only weighs 7.9kg , shouldn't basenjis be more like 10kg for females? Or is it due to her age that she's not at that weight yet, she was born in January last year :)

  • i use blue buffalo basic grain free on both of my boys. no issues. used to feed the taste of the wild (until that recall they had years ago)

Chance had tummy issues for many years with long bouts of diarreah, and we have tried many foods, probiotics, home cooked meals etc..until we found Acana grasslands. He has been on it for a few years with good results. Occasionally he gets loose stools, but it's probably because he ate something on the street. My boyz (almost 13, almost 12) are on Evo small bites. One gets probiotics in the evening meal, the other not. Both are on joint sups.

I wanted Brando to at least have some breakfast, but he wouldn't eat a lot. So I tried to split it equal amounts and he would always leave some. Then I gave him a smaller amount in the morning and then larger at night and that was the right balance and he now eats both meals fully. You might just experiment to see what might work if you really want her to have two meals. Also, I completely agree with Pat about controlled feeding. I think picky eaters then understand that if they want something to eat, they bettter get it now or they'll be waiting a long time. Ruby was REALLY picky until I switched food. Brando is still picky on occasion. Both have missed meals because they didn't eat within a set amount of time. One reason I really like controlled feeding is that if they are sick and not eating, you know it…also, it helps with controlled "output" as well.

@Robin_n_Jack: I was having the same problem with Jack recently…he's 2...he wouldn't eat, I called it his anorexic phase. He would eat acouple of bites in the morning, ad about half of his food in the afternoon. There has been a lot of excitement around lately (Dad's home, and we are packing to move) so I thought that might have something to do with it, and I figured he would eat when he was hungry. He hasn't been acting lethargic or sick, just not eating. Finally, after trying everything I could think of, treats in with the food (worked for a little while) pretending to eat it my self and trying to hand feed him(he looked at me like "If you think it is so good, why don't you eat it?) this morning I mixed some water in with the food. Next thing I know, it was all gone. Yay! no more Ally McBeal doggie! Glad to hear that he is eating again. :-) I think we all know what its like to worry that your B isn't eating enough.

I have been giving Sahara Blue Buffalo for months now and she loves it. She is picky about what she likes to eat, I use the dry in the blue bag, and mixed alittle wet with it. Read those labels on the cans, lots of veggies, and antioxidants for good health. I have tried many foods and she eats this the best. While I was reading the labels a lady and her husband bought one of those huge bags and I asked about the food. They told me they had lost one of their dogs to cancer and now with a new dog they only buy Blue Buffalo. If you try a new food the girl there told me to start out with only a small amount mixed into their regular food. You then over a few days mix more and more until you end up with only the new food. I do this and Sahara hardly has any bowel problems. She had never been a big eater, she weighs 22pds. and the vet told me today that her coat was beautiful and she weighs exactly what she should for a Basenji. I was happy she is healthy and sassy!!!!! Good Luck with finding a food you like.:D
