What do you think about this name??

Basenji Talk
  • @Mikecherves:

Yea my dad comes home after a couple of hours after I leave and he lets him out of the crate and plays with him. Then when he leaves my sister wakes up and plays with him. Then 2 hours after she leaves I come home from schools, so she's not in the crate for too long. Only at night, she stays in the crate for 5-6 hours at night. Btw, do u guys recommended putting her litter box in the crate. She's already potty trained and knows that she has to go in the box. The crate we have is way to big and I don't wanna give her too much space.

NO…. she should stay in the crate and YOU should take her out after a few hours to the potty box.... and usually I would wake mine up at different hours when sleeping and put them outside (California) or in the potty box...

  • Congrats on getting your pup and I like Bandit for a girl or boy.
Naming a puppy is hard, lucky it's your choice and you don't have to please the rest of a family.

  • right, from the beginning my mom told me that the name is MY decision and whatever i name it will be fine. And I am the first person to see it in the morning after it slept. I wake up an hour earlier before school so i have time to play it. minor sacrifice for all the happiness she brings me. I'm not sure why people say the Basenji breed is not intelligent. The second day after an 8 hour trip into a new brand new environment, i already taught her how to sit. I think they are very smart dogs.

  • Just wanted to let you know, i have decided to name her Dexy. Although i like Bandit more, i called her Bandit for today, and i felt it was too difficult to pronounce. I know it sounds stupid but i feel like a dogs name should be flow out the mouth a little easier. Although i think my registered name is going to be 4-eyed Bandit because it has spots above its eyes that look like glasses haha. Here are the pics i promised.

I totally get that! It's actually one of the things I consider when naming a new dog. How quickly I can get it out, how it feels on my tongue and how the name shortens.

I don't think that sounds stupid at all, I totally agree, a dog's name should flow off the tongue. Shout the name out the back door a couple times, what does it sound like then? Also, be aware of what the name sounds like when it's shortened, "Dex" sounds better then "Band ". I always thought "Pistol" would be a good name for a dog, but….

  • Dexy is a lovely happy name, our boy is Kaiser which has been shortened to Kai which becomes KaiKai in a happy tone to get him to recall(haha sort of recall). Enjoy your girl she looks like a snuggle bug and people who say they aren't intelligent obviously never had a Basenji or think they aren't because they are smart enough to choose whether to obey or not, I would say they don't have slave obedience but respect obedience if you get what I mean.

Thanks, yea i think eventually everyone will just call her Dex. I want to take her out for a walk so badly already but im waiting for her to get all her vaccinations. For now i walk her around in my fenced backyard with a leash

  • In my opinion, Dexy rolls off the tongue more than Dex does…...love the name Dexy....it's like 'sexy' but with a little flair. And she is indeed a beauty.

  • Well so far it's pretty easy saying Dexy. And I'm glad you like the name haha, I think she's beautiful aswell

  • She is lovely! I will post tomorrow…

Loki's picky eating comes and goes, even after Kaia got here. He has had no problem letting her finish his dinner when he didn't feel like eating. I've added yogurt and/or pumpkin to his kibble and that has helped him finish his dinner. They are oddballs in that they will sit and wait for the other to finish, then switch bowls to make sure every last bit has been cleaned up. They also frequently trade bully sticks with one another, but higher value stuff like meaty bones are a no-no to come near. Last month I started them both on Nupro and he actually gets excited at meal times! That has never, ever been the case prior to adding that in. I haven't had to utter the dreaded "finish your dinner" in weeks ;)

I have a general question. Does anybody elses Basenji not like to be picked up. Ours sometimes loves it, and sometimes not. Also sometimes she runs up to dogs as quiet as can be and plays, and than other times she makes a squeeling noise, and people are afraid she is picking a fight with their dog. But I think shes just talking. She squeels at our new Whippet puppy, and loves to play with her and is as gentle as can be, considering the Whippet puppy is really rough on my poor Basenji baby girl. does anyone know what the squeeling means. The baroo I get she does that all the time. The squeeling is confusing.

An intact pair is doable, but if you have a male who is really wanting to be with the female when she is on heat, better prepare your neighbours for some sleepless nights. Some can howl for hours… Besides that, it's just watching them all the time when they are together so no 'accidents' will happen. Getting a dog only to keep your other dog company is what I allways advice against. I've had 2-3-4 dogs together the last years, and from time to time I set up a webcam when I leave home so I can see what they do. I close the door behind me, they jump on the couch or in a basket and they sleep till I get home again. Never seen them play together while I was away. If it is only to keep him some company, why not a cat instead of another dog? Much easier and see cat-dog plays far more over here then dog-dog plays. A better reason to get a another dog, is that you want another dog. With 2 dogs, you also need to train them separate, walk them separate... to keep the bonding between you and the dogs stronger, then the bond between the 2 of them.

Although my DH gets yearly "puppy lust", my personal rule is "I don't take any basenji under 2". By 2, their brains have developed and their attention span is longer than a nanaosecond (where you are concerned). They still have plenty of youthful energy but are not uncontrollable maniacs bent on destruction. That said, I confess I get puppy-lust myself, they are just so cute and funny and adorable. That is how they live to adulthood! Anne in Tampa
