Buddy - i really need you opinion guys ! Is he basenji x ?

  • Hi guys, This is my dog Buddy, I adopted him from the pound when he was 6 months old and they told me he was a jack Russell terrier, as he has gotten older I really believe he may be a jack Russell x Basenji, when I took him to the vet he agreed with me.. What do you guys think?
(this is the best pic I could get as he never sits still :P)

  • While no one could say for sure he doesn't have basenji in there, he truly doesn't look basenji to me.

  • How big is he? What kind of mannerisms does he have? Does he bark? He could have some B in him and he might not, but he sure is a cute little thing!

  • I would say he has a little Basenji in him. I hear Petsmart will do a DNA test for about $40.00. Nice looking little guy.

  • First Basenji's

Almost looks Basenji-Beagle-something else to me. His back legs are rather, well, leggy! And slightly more Basenji than JRT to me. The nicely curled tail, of course… but many dogs have curly tails.

He looks mischievous, and cute. =)

  • Nice looking mix whatever he is, he looks like a sweety and lucky to have been saved from the pound by you.

  • Thanks guys, crappy picture, i'll get a better one. Hes alot smaller than a basenji but alot taller and skinnier than a JR. He does Bark, but tends to make a whole lot of other noises instead, i've read up on Basenji's but never seen or heard one so i dont know what kind of noises they make.
He has already had eye problems and has quite strong skin allergies which i understand Basenji's are proned to?

As for his temprement, i took this from wikipedia :
"The Basenji is alert, affectionate, energetic, curious and reserved with strangers. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play, and teasing the owner into play. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people and can become emotionally attached to a single human. Basenjis may not get along with non-canine pets. It is commonly patient, but does best with older considerate handlers. Basenjis dislike wet weather, like to climb, can easily get over chain wire fences, and are very clever at getting their own way."

All of this is him down to a tee! we also have a cat which he just torments the hell out of..

Does he sound anything like this?

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

I agree with the others that although he seems to have Basenji in him - his head is def. not Basenji. As for the leg I'd have it amputated if it troubles him - He'll cope with 3 legs I'm sure, but certainly consult a specialist first. Please keep us updated.

@Benkura: I've met Roxy and I must say I could have taken her home! Her temperament and personality are fab! Glad to see you got her on the train no probs. Now on to the important stuff - Definitely Torchwood! :D I love Doctor Who, David Tennant was/is the best. Don't like the look of the new guy though. I do prefer John Barrowman when he speaks with his proper Scottish accent, it makes him even more handsome!!! :o Thanks for the lovely comments about my Roxy. :) Yes, I agree, DT is the best Doctor Who that I've seen and I adore John Barrowman, especially when he speaks in his Scottish accent! Oh, delicious. :o

Regardless of how she looks - the fact is that having 2 bitches together is frequently a disaster - it will work until it doesn't. In a young puppy standing toeing out is not so bad because as they develop they will have more spring of rib and the feet will correct to front. Toeing in this badly at 2 will only get worse - judges that are hard core sighthound judges will put her to the end of the line with that much toeing in. (Pat Craig Trotter comes to mind) I like the neck shape better on this one - but again from the picture we are looking at just parts - how the dog uses what they have is the main thing and we can't tell that from a picture. Take your bitch out - learn what it's all about so that when you develope an eye not for what is available but for some lines that you like - you can find a nice male to join your house.

Thanks to everyone for their opinions. everyone here at work decided that they liked the second one, however everyone is distracted by my striped gloves. They also think that Elsie looks huge in her sweatshirt. I havn't decided what I am going to do yet.. I think I will try shooting again and see what those pictures bring. This is why I started taking them early. It is tough getting a picture of Oakie with her eyes open. We make fun that she is like forest gump. I will post the new pictures after I take them… thanks again. Lynne
