Exporting 10.5 year old female Basenji over 12 hours in cargo

Basenji Training
  • We are planning to go back to Japan and my girl, Rita (10+ years), has to be in a crate more than 12 hours.

She is diabetic so we give her an insulin shot twice a day.

That by itself is a worry. On top of that, since she now completely hates a crate from her recent experiences (blood glucose tests) at the vet, she absolutely becomes out of mind when being placed in a crate.

We've been trying to re-train her, but she becomes so panic that she bit into the gate to cause some of her teeth completely chipped.

Do you have any good idea to make this trip easy for her??

We even thought of finding somebody who would take care of her and leaving her behind, but we don't believe not so many people can diligently give a shot twice a day like us who are working at uor home office.

    Rita Mom (Naoko)

  • Is she flying with you or in cargo?
I would suggest getting a different type of crate and start over with training. (hopefully that will get rid of some/many negative connections she has with the current crate.) Crate Games dvd has some excellent suggestions for getting a dog into a crate and liking it. If you can't get another crate, you could you take the current crate apart and do some crate games then put it back together and start over with the start of the crate games. Go slowly.

If you're thinking about drugs, you will absolutely need to do one or more "test" runs before the flight.

@yaleezaforeva said in More crate/separation anxiety issues. 12.5 week old puppy: @zande its a little harsh to suggest we're treating him like a toy that we're "putting in a cupboard when he's inconvenient for us." as mentioned, we're simply trying to get him comfortable with us being away as we'll eventually have to do so when going to work...during that time, we'll also be ensuring that his time apart isn't for a full 8 hour day, especially as a young puppy, and rather broken into at least two intervals with one of us coming home or a dog walker or a family member. as it stands, he also likes being in his crate overnight right beside our bed (safe space) so that doesn't seem to be an issue whatsoever.. plus we're simply just trying to understand what the best approach is for him to be left alone when we go back to work. we really appreciate your upfrontness and transparency about this...maybe you're suggesting the right approach...we're new at this and so we'll message you to discuss further! again, we appreciate you taking the time to provide advice. If you are home then trying to equal that to when you are gone will not work... IMO... they know when you are at home and when you are gone.... being in his crate at night next to the bed is totally different then in his crate (other for eating) if you are home and moving around. All of mine were/at crate trained... but if we were home, they are with us... I didn't have to crate them during the day as we set up the house with their own dog room... and that room was set up to remove anything important.... BE ADVISED however it if is their dog room and they destroy something, it is on the owner... ours also have access to the backyard via a doggy door, but we have a secure backyard with 12' fences. I will say that with our very first two Basenjis many years ago, they had a crate in the laundry room with a doggy door to outside. At the time we did not have baseboards and found that stripping the wall paper was a great past time.. LOL... and that is the way it was... as we gave them that area... results was to install baseboards... LOL... problem solved

Thanks, I didn't even look at the link in it full pasted format. It was sent to me in an unusual format not just pasted into the message which is why I wasn't sure it would work. Thanks for adding the link on its own. Therese

@Benkura: I sometimes use Rescue Remedie on one of my dogs before I go in the ring as he is a bit excitable. It does work but you need to make sure you don't over do it as it can give them an upset tummy. YUK!! Rescue Remedy – at least the one sold here in the US -- has alcohol, so if you must use it, please do so with caution and sparingly. DO read the ingredients.

Love it. I had seen the golden video a couple years ago and though. well of course a golden would be willing to learn that. Amazing that a Basenji actually decided it was worth while to learn that :)
