Basenji skirts

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I have noticed in the last few weeks that Cody has developed rather long skirts on his back legs. He never had them before (he is 2 1/2 years old) and it now looks like he has little fins, about 1/2 inch long, sticking out of his thighs. Does anyone else have a Basenji with skirts? Could it just be a Spring shedding thing?

  • Chipley grew skirts this winter, but he has mostly shed them now. Hopefully seasonal

  • Yup Becca has them right now. They will eventually fall out as she goes through her summer shed. Tucker didn't get any this winter though. Becca looks very funny because they are way lighter red than the rest of her right now.

Exactly! They ARE lighter. And they just look so silly. Glad to know there is hope that they will disappear. Thanks!!!

  • LOL we call them 'Furry Knickers' :D

  • Her face is even shedding out. If I can get a good picture this weekend I will post it. You can visibly see the line where the winter hair is falling out and her summer coat. I just have to give her a good few brushes and she will be good.

  • Does she look like a hedgehog?
Giza always looked like a hedgehog in the spring.

  • Yeah that is a good comparison. Her face kind of has a mottled look. Too funny.

  • The weather has been so crazy that my boy Arnie is molting! He is almost over it. He has it when the temperature range is wide. The last time I remember him doing it is in the Fall about 5 years ago when we lure coursing down south and living up north.

  • Kipawa's skirt - it isn't big, but I actually love running my fingers over it. :)

@jengosmonkey That is a very interesting link. My girl suffered none of the possible side effects. No lethargy, listlessness, weight gain and her shape remained immaculate till the day she died. But she no longer suffered from IBS.

Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

Yes, Spencer is much better now, but he is still very thin. He lost six pounds. Even strong antibiotics cannot fight a severe abscess. I'm sure your vet found and resolved the problem under anesthesia, so that should put Egyn over the hump. SubQs and a few weeks of antiobiotics will hopefully get him back on the road to health. I had to feed Spencer critical care dog food through a syringe for several days after the surgery, then make him special soft food– the aforementioned meatballs-- for weeks after that. Good luck to you-- and positive thoughts to Egyn!

@ibi_n_sane: the ears of the basenji of the pictures you show look like their is really something wrong, but it is not right to think that a basenji with a bit thin fur on his ears also has a condition/ disease that causes this. Of course, this dog is diagnosed with pattern baldness. And no, you can't say that every basenji/dog with less fur on the ears has this condition. Like Tanza said: it could be flies, or maybe cold, malnutrition.. I do think that Tillo's bald blackish ear rims are more than just 'loosing hair because it's winter/spring/summer..' And I would love to know what's causing it. That's why I wanted to ask it at the University and that's why I was suprised to see the B-ears on the screen and to hear about this 'pattern baldness' :)
