  • OK let's see Ringo loved anything with a strong smell including soap, paint, coffee, perfume, etc. Once a week I would grind coffee from fresh beans and I'd give him a bean. He would take it in the living room, drop it and roll all over it like a cat on catnip then eat it. Well one day, in the morning, I had this sandwich baggy full of fresh ground coffee. I put it on the dresser which is next to the bed so I wouldn't forget to take it with me to work. I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth getting ready to leave for work and heard this wrestling around and thought "what's them Bs up to"?? I went in the room and there was Ringo on the bed, Coffee grounds all over the bed, all over him and it smelled like a coffee shop. He's just looking at me like "Damn this is good coffee"!! I couldn't help but laugh it was way too funny. I had to get going to work so he got to spend the day smelling like Mr. Coffee. I guess this thread belongs in "Basenji swap stories". Oh well.

In addition to all of the above posts, there are definitely basenjis who will not be crated. I have one. Went through all the correct procedures trying to crate Shaye as a new puppy. We got her a wire crate, the right size, put a soft piece of our clothing in it, put it next to our bed at first so we could touch her through the bars - she screamed all the time she was in there, did her business wih her butt against the side so it would go outside, peed all over the place and sat in it, even though we were very slow and careful with it. The eventual result was she broke nearly all her baby teeth biting the crate, never calmed down in it, would not go in to eat, get treats or anything else. Her personality has never changed; she still backs off if she even sees crates other dogs are sleeping in. She is now nearly five, and she does not act like that when she needs to be kenneled at a daycare place, she seems to know it's different there, although if possible she will try to climb her way out at first. When she cannot, she will calm down and rest for the hour they put her in there during the day. Be patient, but if it just never works, so be it. Once Shaye got a little older and we got her a companion, she has been totally trustworthy while we are gone.

An agility dog is always an agility dog, no matter how old! And racers too I guess! None of mine are athletes but Nicky at 14 always amazes people, if you don't see her grey hairs or cataracts, you think she is much younger. Love the 'oldies but goodies'.

mine love ice too, but not as much as aerosol whipped cream! They come running when they hear the ice and the sound of the whipped cream shooting out of the can!!

Sometimes I actually think basenjis have magic pee. The grass always seems to be greener in those spots. :D

@Vegas: "Sorry sir, he always does this when he smells bacon." Ha! That's funny. :D It's sure not fun getting a ticket though. Sure sorry to hear that. Stinkin' slow semi :)
