Hawthorne berries

Off Topic
  • Does anyone know if they are safe for humans to eat them off the trees? One of the walks we take with Kipawa is an area where there are tons of hawthorne berries. Do birds eat them? Who/what eats them?

  • I used to eat hawthorn berries and with no ill effect but they don't taste particularly nice . Although my Basenjis sniff them they never attempt to eat them so I assume they're not good for them.

  • Hawthorn is assumed to be a safe berry to eat. I have read the seeds are not so good, but in most cases, the fruit is consumed and the seeds are passed. Birds eat the fruit and spread the seeds… I have not been able to find any information validating that the seeds are toxic - most likely a legend as history shows that there have been many food and medicinal uses for Hawthorn over the ages.

  • Okay, so I was out on our dogwalk this morning and decided to eat one of the hawthorne berries. Not good at all! The texture is weird - very mooshy and very little flavour if any. However, I did come across a tree with these smaller orange fruit on them (the size of a large grape). Now THOSE are tasty. I believe they are a variety of plum, because they have their own 'pit' in them. Kipawa is not interested in them at all - he walks right past the ones on the ground.

@JENGOSMonkey I WAS THERE FOR '89! I was a kid, but I remember the water coming out of the swimming pool in huge waves and everything falling from the shelves! I was actually born in San Jose, but moved around a lot later LOL I hear the wildfires are more of a concern for you guys now? That's scarier than quakes for me...

I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

@kembe - Very True Kembe, here is a link on looking for a responsible breeder. https://bconc.org/finding-breeders-red-flags There are many scammers out there, don't fall for one.. or a person that is not a responsible breeder.

@Kembe, nice post! We've gone to solid food chopped up in a food processor, but we're grinding it a bit more course as we go. So far, no puppies are choking, but good to know!

@Ashmoore92 It got put on the "back burner" ... I have some, but not enough for a book. I'll circle back around to it.
