Escaping Playpen

Behavioral Issues
  • So for those of you who think that Basil doesn't have any basenji in him… this morning when I put him in his playpen before I left for work he climbed up the side of it and hopped onto his kennel then screamed at me to rescue him. He's never done this before (that I know of). So I put his dog bed on top of the kennel so he couldn't climb up there. He usually only has access to this dog bed when I'm in another room for somewhere for him to lay. When I came home at lunch, everything was fine. He was calm and everything was as I left it. Then i got home at the end of the day.... his dog bed was in his play pen... he had chewed a huge hole all the way through the center of the dog bed. I found him on top of the kennel whining. Now my question is... I'm gone for 4.5 hours in the morning then I come home for an hour and gone again for 3 hours. Mostly every single day I have come home to dry puppy pads and no accidents. Should I start just straight kenneling him while I'm at work? What should I do? I don't want him to end up hurting himself trying to escape or escaping and hurting himself by doing something else like chewing a cord.

  • If it's an exercise pen can you get a top for it? I had to Do that with Oakley and even after he couldn't get out from the top he used his nose to push it from room to room and I came home to a bloody and bruised nose. For a visual this was a 4'x4'x4 wire exercise pen with metal wire top! After a week of that I gave up And he is now double masterlocked into his kennel! O, the price of safety!!

  • Good advice.

  • And any and all pups… Basenji or not will try and climb out of a pen they don't want to be in.... so that is not just a Basenji trait

As they say "put a lid on it"

I'll try to find a top for it, thanks… the basenji comment was a joke :p because all of you complain about your escape artists.

  • LOL I have had worse escape artists than Basenjis… but it's rare. Yep a top on it.

I was a little pre-occupied earlier today, and Doodle displayed her displeasure at my constant delays... how? She got up on the sofa and did this little prancing-dancing thing. Like she was saying, "haha, look at me misbehaving". LOL oh yeah.... if that is her "breaking bad", I'm in trouble, she's got my heart!

Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

Neutering is not going to help - training is. But a good trainer will train YOU to deal with the dog. If a trainer can get him to behave but you can't - there is little to be gained from paying out money. This is something you should never have allowed to happen, but since it has, I think you should deal with it and @JENGOSMonkey has given you a good idea to start you off. Withdrawing treats is a good idea, but also, get up and walk away. He could be biting to get attention and therefore you withdraw the attention at the first sign of a bite, with a firm NO.

@sarahmiri - I would say no to carrying him.... don't pick him up, but get down to his level as Zande pointed out in her response.

Just thought I'd share an update on this. I removed the blankets from the crate and replaced them with a mattress. We have been strict about her only staying in the crate at night. When we have had accidents I have cleaned up, with a dog urine killing spray, and placed her back in the crate. Everything is progressing smoothly, not had any accidents for over a week now. So it's been a rather quick turnaround, lovely to have her properly crate trained again. Thank you all for sharing advice on the situation.

we built an indoor and out door kennel. inside is on a basement/ cement floor. it is a chain link 5x5x4 with a gate(that we now lock with a chain,as they got the gate latch up and out and open, so we chain it with a carbiner lock.) we used chicken wire on the roof and wired it on so they cannot jump out. they seem to be very content (unless they know we are home, so we dont leave them in there if we are home). the outside one is exactly the same but with a 10x10x6 with the wire roof and chain/lock. it also has a tarp over one side for shade/rain protection… but we really try to not leave them outside if it is going to rain or it is cold. we put doggy beds inside and a dog house outside. we had excapers too.. at thru 4 kennels. and would get out .. this relly really helped. we got the small one from walmart .. ordered it online and the large one from a farm and home.. came with a gate too. they were both very easy to assemble and we also lined the outside one with cement garden type blocks so they cannot dig out. we are all happy now.
