@rjbasenji - this is the time to align with a responsible breeder for a pup maybe in 2021. Because Basenjis only come in season once a year and their litter size is only 4-6 puppies, it is difficult to find one especially will all the people that "want" one... If you can visit with a breeder that would help you or if not call them on the phone and tell them why you think that a Basenji would be a good fit for your family/lifestyle.

Quite common in some lines. Zuri Basenjis being one… it is called "masking" typically fades by the time they are 6 to 9 months old. You will find it with breeding with Tri in the pedigree. Notice in the stacked photos at a younger age they are quite black, pictures where they are older not as much

Im glad you asked that question Barklessdog, as I was going to ask the same thing !!!
Pat is there any bias in the showring to the black mask, or do you keep the show pups at home till its gone ??? Do they ever not lighten up ???

There is no DQ in Basenjis so would not disqualify in the show ring. So, I have shown with the masking still visable. And I have never seen one that stays black/black. The masking might still be visable, but lightly.
If you go to my website and then to Meet the Girls, look at the red girls, you can still see the hint of masking on Maggii, Fatia and Kristii (all from the Zuri line and Tri Factored)

Cute, pudgy little furballs - baby everythings are adorable - but B's especially.

I had a look at your pretty girls, but I think I could see it on Maggii amd Kristii, but not on Fatia ;)…
I knew it wouldnt be a disqualification, but just wondered if they had quite a heavy masking, would the judge penalise this ??? I guess every judge is different in their thoughts on this, so its an un-answerable question really !!! Thinking out loud is all :)...

With the masking generally come heavy pigment…
and the nice pigment is desired. But, on the flip side, the black hairs interspersed with the red detracts from good demarcation, hence should be considered if/when it came down to something very slight to differentiate between two nearly identical (in quality) dogs in the ring.
The masking is kind of along the same lines as the trindle... it is allowed for in the starndard... but can "muddy" up the crisp clean colors of a nice specimen of the breed.

Thanks for that info Kathy…
Its true when they say you learn something new everyday, well at least you should !!!
