  • Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and just wanted to say hello. I got my first purebred basenji in April this year. He is now 61/2 month old and his name is Xavier. I also have a mix breed Basenji (I think she might be mixed with a boxer). She is now 12 years old, but is still keeping up with the puppy.

We are currently training Xavier to be my husbands service dog (ESA). He seems to really enjoy the training and is picking things up quickly. However, I will say he is super stubborn at times, but we knew that going in.

Look forward to participating in the forum in the future.

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait

@Scampy: Hello, everyone! I am so excited to have stumbled upon this forum! I belonged to Basenji Companions until last year, and I miss the community and advice. I have one basenji, a 10-year-old red & white male named Toby. I adopted him six years ago as a "golden opportunity" dog when his show/breeding days were over. He shares the house with three humans and a cat. (We may be inheriting another cat, but don't tell him…I'd sort of promised him a little sister.) Any other west Michigan folk out there? I was born in Kalamazoo! Welcome to the forum! Tabatha

Thank you for your reply Seko. Bandit is 11 weeks this Wednesday 6th Sept. When he turns around bearing his teeth and growling after being told off for being naughty, I point my finger at him saying a LOUD NO!! He doesn't like it, puts his ears back and looks at me. I have bought a clicker and will attempt to train him and my Lowchen "Alfie" together with liver treats. Wish me luck!! Angee
