Tiny bumps all over his coat

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi, my sweet Marley has tiny little bumps (about the size of a beebee) all over his body. Started out about four days ago and is spreading all over his coat, even on his head. Any ideas??

  • hives, usually from an allergic reaction to something eaten, but can also be from a bug bite/sting.

Has he had anything new to eat?
Best bet is to call the vet's office, explain the situation, ask if benadryl will help and how much. Also if he appears itchy, a cool bath helps.

Four days is a long time from a bite/sting. So I'd almost bet it's food or environment related and it's a series of reactions to the same trigger.

Let us know how it goes.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback. We haven't changed his diet but he eats just about anything he finds in the yard. I'll call the vet and see what they say.

I haven't studied coat colour inheritance in dogs, but from what I know of it in horses, you can tell quite a lot by looking at sire and dam and grandparents. Sometimes you can rule certain colours in or out, and determine probabilities of the colours you will get in a mating. Someone who knows more about dog colour genetics will be of more help. If an animal is homozygous for a trait, or heterozygous can sometimes be determined by knowing the colour of the parents…..

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

mine wear coats a lot in the winter. My boyz wear coats inside as it is often chilly inside. Of course my boyz are almost 14 and 15; I don't worry as much about Z who will be 5 next month. The real problem here is the wind. It can be bitterly cold when that wind blows. So I make sure to get them a coat that blocks the wind. Regular fleece feels like nothing out here. I don't do boots, but sometimes I wonder if I should. the B's are pathetic rotating which foot is held up not touching the cold snowpacked ground. I also increase food on cold days. Having said all that, right now it is sunny and in the mid 60s and feels great! I even have a window open. Of course a few years ago when my parents visited, we had a blizzard for Thanksgiving.

We've finally had some success with Butter's allergies – wiping his face, belly, legs, pads & between his toes after he goes for a walk in the field. It's been a long haul and he'd been reacting to fungi and plants in the aster family (ragweed, etc...). Because he'd eat grass, sniff it, and walk through it, he'd have terrible reactions and the "little" bumps under his coat started turning into bigger bumps. All set for now. If an elimination diet hasn't helped with the bumps, it could be an allergy to something in the environment -- try wiping Hotep down after she's been out and see if it helps.

I don't know if they are in your area, (I doubt it) but Nala had bites on her from black flies that were red and itchy and more of a ringed look to them. I took her to the vet immediately, only to be told what they were! Boy did I feel silly…I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it...

If you go to Omaha Vaccine site… and then seach for 3V caps you can find these... I am fairly sure it is the same thing that is being talked about... they are prettty cheap on here.... and I know from experience, buying from the Vet the price is "really" pushed up.....
