Meeko my Tri-Colored Basenji

Member Introductions
  • This is Meeko my Tri-colored Basenji born August 2009. He came from Kara Leerhoff. He is a great dog, very cuddly, loves people and other dogs. He easily was house broken with only 5 accidents inside the house. However, he does not like to walk on the leash he pulls and pulls even though he has been to obedience training. Hopefully I will be able to find some tips on here.

    Respectfully,

    Thomas

  • cute puppy!

  • Hi Thomas and Meeko! Welcome to the forum - glad to have you here. What kind of a collar are you using to walk Meeko? I use a wider martingale (greyhound style) and it works well. Training has to be consistent, though. I know others here will give you lots more advice.

Cute Boy, don't know Kara Leerhoff? Is there a kennel name that is used? Pedigree? Many of us are related by our Basenjis

  • Thomas, I use loose leash walking training because pulling on a leash is one of my pet peeves. I have trained feral dogs to walk on a leash without pulling in only a few days, so trust me it works.

  • Welcome Thomas and Meeko - he has a very mischievous look about him!

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

@donc if this animal is connected to any African dogs of recent import. esp from Benin ( a former Portuguese colony that is possible OR while the numbers registered in the US is small....hunter dogs and packs have been in the US since the late 1800s. typically found in New England with pockets in fl, ca, and Georgia.

PLEASE visit www.basenjirescue.org and take a look at the current purebred basenji rescues availiable and ready for forever homes. We offer transport options where volunteers are availiable. I just recently flew a dog from Texas to Toronto, A plane ticket for $220.00 bought the dog climate controlled in cabin flight, and the adoption was a success. Please email me if you have any questions! BENDA4BRAT@YAH0O.COM
