New game for my dogs!

Basenji Talk
  • I thought i would share with you the latest game my dogs have found to exercise themselves. We are on a farm in southern Queensland we have 171 acres. there is 40+ acres around the house of irrigated lucerne (alphalpha) which are mowed.
My dogs 1 7 month old Basenji, 4 mini foxies and red cattle dog are madly chasing Magpies which have just finished nesting.
Magpies defend their nests or young fiercely and will swoop and chase you if annoyed.
Well the dogs must have been swooped and now they are fair game.
It's very entertaining watching the 'pack" chasing them the length and breadth of the cultivation. If the dogs could climb trees they would.
Usually it's Zuri the basenji out in front it's a coursing track in my front yard. They have even started chasing anything with wings.

  • What lucky doggies to have the space and some magpies to hassle, nice tired out dogs for you only downside is a healthy appetite unless they happen to get lucky with the magpies. Kaiser shows a lot of interest in birds as he knows they usually drop food from the trees for him.

  • Can you post pictures?

    Sounds lovely!

So much cold and snow here.

  • Unfortunately, the only think photos would show is black dots in paddocks of green lucerne.
I have tried taking photos but without a zoom lens it's impossible.
The paddocks are about 200 yards by 600 yards. Sorry.
But I did see a fox sneaking across a paddock today at 3pm in the afternoon.
The dogs must have been asleep! I called them but then the fox bolted, too late for the sleepy dogs.

Her face looks Basenji, maybe not the muzzle however. Are they destructive? Can be, don't have to be. I don't like to crate and I never have, beyond the initial puppy stage or with a rescue until I can get a handle on what to expect. I do restrict access to areas of the house that might be vulnerable until I am sure of the dog. Not all can be trusted to have free rein. Be consistent in what you expect or will tolerate, and be very watchful until you understand what behaviour is "normal" for your new dog. Are they really that active? I would say no. She is likely excited to be in a new place and curious about everything. She should settle down. Of course, with a rescue there may well be reasons someone gave up on her, and it's not always immediately apparent if a dog has problems. Hopefully she will fit in well with your family. Invisible fence......likely not a good choice for a Basenji, particularly if there are coyotes in your area. You need to protect her. Coyotes will go after a small dog, and sometimes even a not so small one. I know someone who lost a Jack Russell when he was lured by coyotes and then attacked once he was beyond his master's protection.....and Jack Russells are tough little dogs! However, invisible fence can be useful to back up a physical fence if your dog turns out to be an escape artist. Regarding landscaping.....there are some deer fences that blend well and become almost invisible. Perhaps combined with invisible fence that might be a good option. Otherwise, walks or biking your dog should help, and definitely challenge her mentally. Basenjis are clever and I believe they enjoy learning. I taught my boy to retrieve objects by name.....it was fun for both of us. Good luck with her.

It's been my experience that sometimes my basenji just gets it in her head that she doesn't like another dog, and for seemingly no good reason. I have been able to mitigate her behavior, but this is not a cure…. First, an excited basenji is a biting basenji. Make sure he's calm. Make him sit. Exert your dominance. Stand over your dog, look him in the eye. You need to snap him out of his mindset and remind him that you're in charge and he doesn't need to be aggressive. It will take time and patience, but he can be made more comfortable... I've also found that walking together as a "pack" helps. The two humans in the middle, the dogs held on a very short leash to either side, and you ignore your dog's aggression, focusing them on the walk itself. After a short while, they should just about forget one another. But this also acclimates them to each other. Good luck!

These games seem to be a great test for dog intelligence with several step problem solving.

QUOTE=LeeL: I have noticed that it is a lot easier to accidentally train a Basenji than on purpose. ;) And not necessarily something you WANT them to learn!

Hollie would simply chew up the plastic bottle to get to the treats. She has done this with EMPTY bottles. That's my B!
