NYC/Urban Owners: Tips on getting a puppy used to loud street noise?

Basenji Talk
  • Just wondering if anyone has advice or anecdotal experience on helping a puppy get used to being outside on busy/loud NYC streets.

Unfortunately, we live on a relatively loud street so our pup gets pretty scared the moment we're out the door. Even if we carry him to a quieter side street, he gets scared when cars go by. We've been trying to condition him by taking him out and feeding him food/treats to help get his mind off the noise.

    Anything else you'd recommend?

  • He might get used to it naturally over time; maybe it's obvious to you already, but don't give him a treat if he's showing fear. Best not to do anything really….what I do is stand still and relax if they try to run away [if possible]. Puppies will imitate your behavior, so if you start freaking out at something or get on edge they'll feed off of that. Redirection (with food) is helpful if they start fixating on something scary.

As long as you're rewarding him when he eventually switches from fear to curiosity, that's all there is to it really…at least when dealing with an already well socialized pup. Commands 'touch' 'look' and 'watch' are all very helpful later on for helping a dog confront something scary....my adult dog has had a couple of times where he saw something 'off' and started getting fearful and I'm glad I taught him touch....as it only took about 30 seconds for him to get over it. Fearful dogs who don't have the confidence to confront their fears are not fun to deal with.

  • When you are dealing with something that an animal is afraid of, the best approach is to find his "comfort" distance from the thing that scares him. A busy street makes this a bit more difficult, as you have to find a way to give him that "distance". If you have a car, maybe transporting him to a less busy area might make a good start. Perhaps a side street, where he is comfortably away from busy traffic. You could then walk toward the busy street, pausing as soon as you see some sign of anxiety, and retracing your steps just little until he is in his "comfort zone" again. Gradually…...with the use of bribery and rewards......ask him to approach closer to the scary stuff. Liberally reward him for being there, then retreat. The idea is to not force, let him decide when he is ready. If he feels he can retreat at any time, he will have more confidence. This approach may take awhile, but is less likely to create a permanent aversion. (it works well with spooky horses).

training it (potty train, learning commands such as sit, no etc or remembering their names) -from my experience it i harder to tach them so you really need to practice them few time in a day. Removing it from its litter? Will it have separation anxiety? -yes they would. 1st month would be difficult but after that they will feel more relaxed. Will they be comfortable settling in a new home? -it would take obviously but just be patient and always notice them for them to easily love you! good luck

So I've not given up on this. I went back to rainshinefoundation.org.au and researched it a bit. It looks legitimate to me, and I'm really skeptical. This isn't an endorsement. They claim they are funneling the majority of donations back to the people they are providing assistance to. I could get behind this. Is a Basenji Hunting Bell worth $300 USD? In my best Texas accent, "Hell Yeah!" If they really are sinking the percentage of money they receive back into direct support as they claim on their website... it's hard NOT to get behind that. I'm still trying to verify that. Feel free to chime in. Coconut is too big. Western Buckeye is too thin. If the above is legit... I don't want to compete. I don't want to make something that mimics those from Africa. If it's legit... I'd rather support the cause and spend the $300 USD. So mine have to look different. They have to resonate sound. Which wood? CNC engraving? Laser engraving? Slots? Collar? Clasp? How do I support Basenjis? Tooling is going to cost a bit. I think I have have the bell figured out. I may also have the clappers figured out too, but I need to test all of this. The part that concerns me is the collar. Weaving, macramé, braiding, sewing... Anyway... these are thoughts in motion...

Ready to commit myself!!! Hahaha.. Alleycat- so incredibly adorable, I love the look on his face in the first one…might be a hint of mischief in there?! Lol The little black and white bundles get me everytime! I fell in love with breed and wanted a red and white...but after receiving Oakley...it's hard not to have the black and whites melt me. Take lots of pics, it goes by quicker than I remember thinking it would. Love his wide white stripe and his little white mitten foot in the back...he looks overall to be a "cool, laid back type"?! Perhaps it's because I was so used to the panic look as Oakley was panicked by many things back then!

I was thinking about it, and it may not be the actual noise that bothers him. The fireworks in July didn't bother him, and neither did the parade (firetruck sirens, marching bands, and all) that recently went by our house. It may be the vibrations. We are close enough to the base that our house actually shakes enough to knock the pictures and stuff off of the walls (we actually quit hanging photos on our walls because we had replaced so many frames). I'm still going to try some of the suggestions and will definitely figure out a new schedule for him. Thanks again.

I like this one a lot, it's hilarious! Being a BRAT member, I would have to rephrase the last one about pregnancy, though… (I know, I'm taking it too serious... sorry). :DI am definitely going to make a copy of it for my fridge!:D
