Depression???

    Okay here's the scoop:

    I had adopted a chihuahua mix from the shelter 3 months ago. He and Anubis became BEST friends, always playing, sleeping together and everything. I recently had to give him up because of my landlord. Spinner (the chi mix) had become too territorial of my yard and actually bit my landlord (oops!!!). He was a shelter dog so we weren't sure of his past. His becoming too protective we think was him channeling his FEAR into AGGRESSION. My landlord wouldnt give me any time to work with him or anything…so we took him back to the shelter (NO KILL Shelter).

    Anyways on to Anubis:
    Since bringing Spinner back he has been VERY depressed. This was a week ago when I took him back to Second Chance. Since then Anubis has been just laying around, not fully eating his meals, drinking a little bit but mostly just sleeping on my bed. Ive tried to entice him to play, he does for maybe 3min then he lays back down. Ive tried to entice him with raw chicken (HIS FAVORITE)...nothing. THEN I got a puppy from my friend thinking maybe he'd be happy with someone to play with...yeah right! He snaps when she comes too close. (Poor Casey!). Ive given Anubis lots of cuddle time and tons of attention to try to cheer him up. How else can I handle this?

    Don't assume it is depression… get a vet check. Then proceed with other things. Often simply lots of walks and exercise will help.

    And if I remember right, you have had problems with Casey and your Basenji since you brought her home? As I said before, sometimes it just doesn't work

    Although the timing seems to point to being upset about losing his friend, I would rule out any/all physical health problems first.

    @Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

    @Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

    @DebraDownSouth I was going to suggest that maybe a phone conversation might help. When I was a kid, our family dog was most attached to our Mother so when she unexpectedly landed in the hospital, the dog was just beside himself. After about 3 or 4 days, Mom called the house & wanted to talk to the dog & Skip got geared up like she just walked in the door!!! So we "allowed" Skip a phone call to Mom about every other day & both did okay! But when she came home, Skip stayed by her side for about a week except to eat & go out to relieve himself. But now days, with skype ~ Deb, that's an excellent idea!!
