Any clue what my boy is mixed with?

Basenji Talk
  • Our boy is 1 yr old now. We got him from a rescue org last Christmas - he was 8 weeks old at the time. I highly suspect he's at least part Basenji- from his statue to his behavior and character, but he is definitely mixed with something. He's now 57 lbs and rarely barks, but can do so if really worked up playing (LOVES his Varsity Ball!!!!!). Mostly he whines at the squirrels, though. He's super loving and cuddly - but definitely an opportunist. And VERY troublesome to walk as he pulls so hard & is crazy strong! If he wants to go after a squirrel, you're going with him or losing an arm in the process. He's outgrown most of his "bad" behaviors but I have yet to be able to teach him not to pull when walking or jump up on people when first greeting them. But he's worth any trouble he can get into. LOVE my boy!!

Any guesses as to what he could be mixed with?? I'd say maybe pit bull but he's not that bulky and he's pretty big.

  • Hi mickeydoo, and welcome to the Forum. As for your boy, he's a good looking boy and IMO is at least part B, but who am I to say. If he is a puller the best thing would be to have him take an obediance course. Some years back I was the proud poppa of a GSD-Malamute mix who had his own idea of taking a walk, after putting him through an intensive obediance school he was awesome, we could walk through a crowd and he would stay at heel totally. In the meantime you might check into a no pull harness, there are many on the market and most are effective.

    O. K. I see a couple of things in your post. How much does she weigh? I ask because although Basenjis can be difficult on leash and are strong dogs, they sure can't pull me where I don't want to go! If control is an issue, I find a martingale collar with a wide neck works well. However, it would be much better to find a solution to this problem. Have a look at this [video].https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwNe5COoGhk Different breed, but I was very impressed with how well this guy's approach worked. Could be something worth trying if you have the patience for it. You say she won't bite you. So what about her feet? Can't you just insist gently that she let you handle them, and reward with treats for cooperation? What does she do, specifically, if you try to hold them? I used to trim my dogs' nails with the dog upside down on my lap, and it worked for all of mine, not that they loved the process, but sometimes you just have to say "yes, I am the boss of you, get over it!" ;-)

You have to change your settings. Or you can upload individual photos with the last icon, the arrow pointing up. Of course, doing a dna test is probably going to give you the most info.

, even the strange voices seem to appear in many pariah type dogs. I can so see that, Moses, our almost 9 month old portuguese podengo grande sounds just like a howlling, yodeling basenji at times, then he breaks into this excruciatingly loud bark..

I recently got a Basenji mix. I am not sure exactly what she is mixed with though. She is about 40lbs, but looks almost 100% Basenji. She is very powerful and a little broad chested. I am lucky with her though. She exhibits all the great characteristics of a Basenji, but almost none of the bad ones. :)
