Fanconi dogs internet discussion list

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • This was just posted on another list from one of the moderators of the Yahoo Group for Fanconi dogs

    Hi, Everybody,

I'm one of the moderators, along with Betsy Polglase and Cheryl
Silver, for the Fanconidogs internet discussion list, and we want to
let you know about a change we're making in the list's membership
policy. Before the direct DNA test was available, there was no way to
know positively that dogs would be affected by Fanconi until they
began to show overt symptoms such as spilling sugar. And since the
list was originally set up as a support system for people who were
dealing with the day-to-day issues of caring for a Fanconi-afflicted
dog, we only allowed people to join the list after their dogs had a
    definitive diagnosis.

Now things are different because of the DNA test, and we have
reconsidered our membership policy. From now on, anybody who has
received a positive DNA result for Fanconi is more than welcome to
join. Just go to this site: http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=fanconidogs
and click on "Join this Group."

As you may be aware, Dr. Gonto and others are working on a new Fanconi
treatment protocol which is due out sometime next year. This may
allow owners of dogs who have tested postive for Fanconi to begin
treatment before any symptoms appear. And even if your dog is not
ready to start the protocol yet, you may find it helpful to know what
types of issues you will be dealing with at some point down the road.

By the way, we have a number of dogs on the list who are not
basenjis. We have also had some dogs with acquired Fanconi – rather
than Fanconi that was genetically transmitted. Jerky treats from
China seem to be the biggest culprit in a dog's getting the acquired
form of the disease. If you know anyone with a pet of any variety who
suffers from Fanconi, please let them know about our discussion list.

I will post this on the lists I belong to, but please feel free to
forward it to any other lists or persons who might benefit.

    Thanks!

    Eva

It is my understanding that Dr Gonto can only respond about the protocol to a Vet and can not give advise direct to an owner, so you may want to have your Vet sent that information to him. Or send the lab information and copy your Vet so that he can communicate directly with your Vet if he suggests changes.

Thanks for the advice. We are now lice free, thankfully. I did some research and it turns out that. Dog lice are a specific species, different from human lice and we cant get them, neither can my cats.(I have two cats) I guess the bird lice are different. I had already given them the frontlin( not actually frontline brand, its called Fipronex, so that they wouldnt catch it. So I was extra worried for no reason. I am not a big fan of chemicals either. Thats why I didnt have Ayo on the regular dosis of frontline but the thing is that we have such a big stray dog problem that , almost every patch of grass in town is flea and tick infested and we end up having to deal with it a lot, so most people use frontline or similar products regularly. I didnt really have that problem with my last dog ( my great dane CHelo). I used to find a couple of ticks on him like once a year and usually they would dissapear with one application instead of having to regularly do preventive treatment with it. I will read up on the natural remedies, maybe I can use them next time without having to use the chemicals. I also read that these lice are very very uncommon in countries like United States or European countries,.. again, its the conditions of all the stray dogs that we have here. Its a shame, and there are a lot of organizations that try to help, but in the end, you know, when you have a lot of people that need aid, its really hard to get aid for animals. Thanks for the help….

@tanza: If you go to www.basenji.org, you can get information about Fanconi from Dr. Gonto that developed the protocol. Best to print it off and take it with you tomorrow… and good luck.... I believe you should print the information about Dr. Gonto's protocal and give the information to your vet. Your vet can follow Dr. Gonto's treatment program, i.e. lab tests to run; follow-up lab suggestions; therapeutic goals; management dosing guidelines, etc. Your vet should read all the information. There is also also correspondence info: address, email and phone/fax numbers to reach Dr. Gonto. So sorry for you and your baby. Good luck with your visit tomorrow. I would go in armed with this information.
