Does anybody know of lure coursing in Texas

Basenji Training

  • Well, Nayru does like to chase toys. I found two balls today and pitched them out into the minefield–I mean living room--and she POUNCED on them. :) Then rolled on them for good measure. Silly girl.

  • Last night our whippet tore the webbing between her two middle back toes running thru the yard, so we are going to cancel on going to Hutto now so she can have some crate rest and hopefully be back up running for next weekends ASFA trial at our home club in Lawrence, KS. The basenjis will get to run NOTRA near home this weekend as a consolation.

  • Lisa, sorry to hear about your girl's injury. Here's to her fast healing. Sorry I won't meet y'all this weekend.

  • I am just getting into Lure coursing and am taking my 1y/o to her first event on November 26th …. there is a 3 day regionals in Decatur, TX. Its Fri, Sat, and Sunday ... Saturday is the biggest day. We are going Friday because I want to see she my senji will run a practice to see how she does.

  • We are running all 3 days in Decatur along with Linda Stillwell with her 3 so there will be plenty of basenjis to meet.

I'm very excited to get my Penny into coursing and to see our first event on that Friday!

  • It will be good for you to meet the club membere there and find out if they have practices scheduled over the next few months. I practice my dogs for at least 5 trials before I try them for a certification run. You want them totally comfortable with coursing and running with others before rushing. My 4 year old whippet has just started coursing this fall, she was always terrified of running with others till now. ASFA offers singles stakes for your dog to run by herself. A great way for both of you to learn about the sport.Next weekend my 2 are going to be tired as we are running 3 days this weekend in OK and all 3 next weekend. We will be down to several more trials in dec and beginning again in March when I can give you some practice runs with them. We are getting a new puppy this winter who will be our for performance socializing in March.

  • Actually the woman who told me about this event and said i should go gave me you and Linda's names and emails cause you have basenjis! How funny is that. Deann Haggard. I ment her at barktoberfest last month.
Anyways that would be really fun to do some practice runs with you. Thank you so much!

Barktober? Are you a fellow Austinite?

  • no dallas area :)

  • Well maybe we will meet at a coursing event some day.

  • Texas needs more basenji lure coursing and Houston needs a new club. I haven't been able to find it unless I'm just overlooking it on the internet.

  • There was lure coursing near Houston-Cat Springs, TX just last weekend. Go to gazehoundsintexas.org and click on the Lure Coursing Links at the top of the page and there will be information about joining the Region 4 Lure Coursing Yahoo Group List. There is also a list of lure coursing clubs. The Houston club is the Houston Area Hound Association.

You can also check at asfa.org and akc.org for event dates and information.

A former Houstonian who hopes to move back next year and at Houston events before they used to run at Cat Springs, I used to have the only Basenji that would be entered. This was about 6 to 8 years ago as Arnie will be 11 years old in January. I would travel to Austin-Hutto, Dallas, and Oklahoma for events with competition.

This is the time of the year for events in Texas.

  • This weekend is the NLCC in Cat spring, next weekend is in Decatur but its a terrrible field. My dogs got totally shreded there on the cut cotton plants growing there so we won't be back. They usually have events in Dec at Cat springs and Waller, but were overcome by othere events this yr so the clubs all combined events at the beginning of the month instead. There will be coursing at Hutto the first and last weekend in March. McKinney has an event scheduled for Jan that we will attend with our 4 if the weather is good enought to make the 8 hour drive. We will mostly be doing events in north TX this yr vs going to the Houston area. Just too expensive to drive 12 hours each way when there are enough events closer to home. 90% of the events are AKC now, the clubs have stopped doing ASFA for the most part as entries were so low.

@ibi_n_sane: yess it was a great day :D cant wait to see the pictures of Job ( Janneke's boyfriend ) that he made from our dogs too! we only took our galgo and 2 ibizans to the coursing, that gives us all our hands full enough haha the basenjis and our oldest ibizan hound can come the next time, allthough they enjoy the racing track too! ( the settlement of the racing track allows us to take all dogs at the same time and not having our hands full with these 6 haha ) I loved to see Barry (the galgo) run.. he ran beautiful…. :D And yes... I liked Cy and Smitty also... :D

@seko: The afghan won over Uku (b/w) and over Valhi (r/w) she got a fright at the begining at the hairy giant dog behind her, stopped for a bit then ran again really well untill the afghan decided to play with her and she couldn't finish properly; the afghan didn't even get disqualified for annoying my dog and got better note  That doesn't sound very fair:mad:

@Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)
