Peeing in my mums house??

Basenji Training
  • Anyone got any ideas on this…

Every time i take Maya to my mums house she will pee in her hallway. This is EVERY time, without fail, unless i carry her through the hall each time i take her around the house. She is impeccibly clean in my house, and any other house she visits, she only does it at my mums  The carpets are all brand new so dont have any doggie smell on them at all (the dogs only have access to the conservatory and kitchen as the house is currently for sale) that might be encouraging it...

    Anyone?

  • I would have to say that she is trying to claim the house as hers…. sounds to me like marking.... and it could be that because they are new, she wants her smell on those carpets.

  • Has your b had a cheek swab done for fanconi?

  • @sharronhurlbut:

I am pretty sure that she has and is clear, her sire and dam are Clear and she says only in her Mom's house… to me that is clearly marking

  • I would say that Maya is taking a break from being a princess, and being a little git instead :D- it sounds like marking out her territory to me.

When Dyna was in season we sent her down to my mums to stay, and peeing on the rug was the very first thing she did - something she never does at home - obviously just trying to put her stamp on a new household.

I bet your mum is pleased to see you arrive with her - especially if the house is up for sale!

  • Sounds like marking to me too, and once done, her odor is there. Not sure what products available in the UK, but you need an enzyme eating product to truly remove her scent from where she peed before.

  • I use a spray with pure white vinegar - helps to prevent a stain and is a cheap way of removing the smell. Naughty Maya but very Baseni typical!!! She is obviously not trying to endear herself to your mother!!

  • The marking thing did cross my mind, but she's such an angel i wouldnt have thought she'd do that!! She hates my mum and my mum hates her so maybe thats why!!

And you're halfway there with the "little git" comment Scott, my mum certainly uses a very similar word to describe Maya :D lol

  • Ooh, and yes she has been tested clear for fanconi :)

I would totally say in that case this is "marking"…...

  • if the white vinegar doesnt work try Cromessol spray - they have a stand at most shows - i always keep spray bottles of it in the house, especially with oldies/pups about.

  • LOL long ago I had a chow and roommate. The roommate did not like the chow and yelled at her. She came home to find the chow had gotten into her laundry basket and pooped. My roommate was smart. She began being nice to the chow. It's like the AA saying, fake it til you make it. She eventually bonded with her.

child gates/fences/room dividers are nice if you want to keep them out of an area. At least thats what we had to do in our sunroom/daughters playroom. Daughter has her toys in the sunroom behind the fence with gate. Other toys she knows she has to pick up and keep track of or Ginger will get them and take outside. Shoes, socks, underwear always get put up. I just got some shoes sleeves for the backs of 3 different closet doors. They help alot. My wife actually has to put her shoes up. Ginger taught her in about a week what I couldnt teach her in 12 years. anything on the floor if fair game. anything on a low shelf withen reach is fair game. Ginger has finally stopped tearing shoes up when she get them for the most part. She just takes them outside now. We have a doggy door so im always checking the backyard for her prizes. Lots of chew toys. Got ginger a few antlers 6-7 weeks ago and wish I had known about that sooner. I cant praise those enough. Took her a week or so to actually want to chew on them but now she will take one and chew for 30-45 minutes at a time. They last forever too. out of 3 6-8" pieces we still have 2 left after 6-7 weeks.

Nice place you live in Nina! Carty I envy you wearing lots of sweaters and coats and pretty scarfs to keep warm. In Zoeys world today she had a blast! After waking up and eating she decided that while I worked she would get into the bathroom where my son left the cabinet open on his way out the door to school. Oh yeah….you guessed it! Toilet paper all over the living room and a pink and blue sponge added in for color! Ahhh a day in the life of a puppy...I hope we all make it through this stage. It has been raining buckets here today so I am thankful for the puppy pads. On a brighter note...she learned the command down or as my son says..."get low". I know she is a bad girl wanting to be good...lol

sounds like separation anxiety. You might try using a crate so he has less space; it might make him more comfortable to have less space, believe it or not! There is a thread here somewhere about how to go about desensitizing a dog to being alone. It takes a lot of work, and very small steps. If you can't find it, let me know, and I will make another post. Experts tell us that it can take up to a year for rescue dogs to settle into their new homes, sometimes. When they find something they really value (their new family) they are afraid when the people leave that they won't come back. Hang in there. Have patience :) Oh, and try the DAP plug ins. They produce a calming pheremone to relax a nervous dog. You can look online, or find them at some pet supply stores. I have no personal experience with them…I keep meaning to try it...but lots of people have very good reports about them.
