Anal Glands, twice a week?

    If we don't express, he leaks onto the sheets. They express flat, no abcess. He usually has stool in his rectum and his poop is firm. Maybe he needs to poop more?

    He hates going out unless its sunny and hot…and we live in Washington State:)

    I am in Wa state as well.
    Get some raw canned pumpkin not the pie filling kind
    and put a scoop in his food each time you feed him.
    This will give him bulk in his stool, which will help empty the anal glands.
    Its cheap and works.

    It could be the type of food you are feeding. What food do you feed?

    You should not have to express them that often. Leaking anal glands are not good. My older female had her anal glands removed a few months ago because of problems, infections that would not clear up and leaking.

    @Schouiffy: So this will need to be a daily imput of pumpkin or sweet potato ? I just use about one teaspoon of canned pumpkin every morning.

    @Benkura: Unfortunately, without actually re-typing the breed notes I can't post them on the forum. You need to either get the paper or subscribe to that part of the website. Health testing is a big talking point in the UK and the breed is very divided over these issues. The KC doesn't recognise any health problems in the breed, therefor there are no tests that can be forced upon breeders here. Is there a way you could possibly take a digital pic of the notes and post them on the forum?

    I would give iot to them at both feeds and maybe start with a teaspoon, and if it doesn't seem to work great up the serving size to tablespoon. I think if I remember right, that it goes three teaspoons to 1 tablespoon, so if you want you could add a teaspoon until you are ath the tablespoon size..makes sense I hope

    According to a study published in the January 2010 issue of Journal of Comparative Pathology entitled, Age and Long-term Protective Immunity in Dogs and Cats by Dr. Ronald Schultz, et als., "Old dogs and cats rarely die from vaccine-preventable infectious disease, especially when they have been vaccinated and immunized as young adults (i.e. between 16 weeks and 1 year of age). However, young animals do die, often because vaccines were either not given or not given at an appropriate age (e.g. too early in life in the presence of maternally derived antibody [MDA])….... The present study examines the DOI for core viral vaccines in dogs that had not been revaccinated for as long as 9 years. These animals had serum antibody to canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) and canine adenovirus type-1 (CAV-1) at levels considered protective and when challenged with these viruses, the dogs resisted infection and/or disease.     I know of breeders that would express anal glands EVERY time they bathes dogs for shows… this was when they showed regularly. I found it to be the most disgusting thing ever. I have read and been told that doing it regularly makes it so they will need to have it done more often or issues will arise. No thanks... I have NO PROBLEMS opening up a new wing at the vets for this!
