Help DH with his 3rd grade classroom, this should be fun!

    DH teaches 3rd grade and is working on a bulletin board for next school year. He wants to do a 50 states postcard theme. Once or twice a week he will pull a postcard and give clues to the students as to which state the post card came from. Once the students guess he will pin it on a map, and his goal is to eventually get most, if not all, of the 50 states.

    He would love to get authentic post cards from each state, so we are looking for anyone interested in helping. He is looking for anyone to send a post card representing their state. It can be blank, and he will write the clues on himself, or if you think it would be fun, you can post the clues. He wants 5 clues, getting easier as they go down the line. Remember it is for 3rd grade, so they should be relatively easy :)

    If you would like to help, we would greatly appreciate it!! Just send your post card to his school at the following address (hope it's ok I post it here, it's a public place anyway, so it's not like the address is a secret) Thank you to anyone who participates!     When does he need them by?
    I'm doing a road trip in the states for my honeymoon end of August and begining of September, I'll probably hit 5-6 states, plus two provinces, if he's interested.

    I'm all over the place. Just somehow or other keep a tally of what you have and I can try to get the rest. Well, okay, Alaska and Hawaii are a little out of my range. I don't have pontoons and a propeller, nor do I have a dog harness and skis on my truck. But I can help with the Lower 48! I just don't want to duplicate anyone else's efforts.

    What a fabulous idea/teaching tool. I remember when I was 8 and my parents told us we were moving to Ohio and I had absolutely no idea where that was. I also remember that one of my teachers incorporated it into a lesson not to long after that (Gee, were my parents involved?). Everyone in the class then knew where Ohio was. That was nearly 40 years ago and I still remember.

    I will see if I can find something generic to Ohio, mostly, around here, the postcards tend towards the Wright brothers and the invention of the airplane. Or would that be o.k.?

    Also, to ask Knipper's question again…when does he need them by?

    And, btw, check out the "where's AJ" threads - if DH is stumped for a fact or trivia about a place, I'd say she's a 'go to' poster.

    Quick question – would you prefer the postcards stamped and addressed, or placed in an envelope and then sent, especially if they're blank?

    You may also want to consider looking at http://www.postcrossing.com. It's an international project, but if the 50 States idea is successful, DH may want to branch out. There's also a forum there where one can post specific requests. I used to send/receive a lot of postcards on that site… =)

    Thanks everyone! School starts early September, so anytime between now and then would be great…but really anytime by the end of September works.
    So...Knipper, if you don't mind and it's not too much trouble, that would be great! Sounds like a fun road trip...we usually take one in the summers too, but had a baby in January, and I'm not quite up for a long road trip with a basenji and a 6 mo old yet...maybe next year!
    And AJ's human, thank you for your offer! I'll tell him to keep track, and we definitely will let you know if we are missing any...I do enjoy reading your Where's AJ posts, and I actually thought of you when I posted this...
    BART...any kind of post card is fine, so send whatever is easiest :)
    Curlytails...thanks for the website, I passed it on to him, so hopefully he'll check it out. YOu can send the post cards any way you want, just blank and alone, or filled out, or blank in an envelope...whatever is easiest...he's flexible and just appreciates people helping out!!

    Sorry it took so long, everything has been on end since the wedding, honeymoon, and Blaze's passing.

    Thank you for updating!! Please still send them if you can, DH's project is going well, I'm not sure how many he has, but I know more will always be appreciated, if not this year, for next year. I know he didn't get as many as he had hoped, so it's great if you can still send them!
    I am sorry to hear about your loss, since having a baby and starting school again, I haven't been on here nearly as much as I wish I could be, everything is so busy…but it's a good busy so I can't complain :)

    @YodelDogs: I bought a new printer recently and I'm having problems with it. It is an HP Photosmart C4680. The problem that I am having is that it keeps printing the file name on the top of the printed page. It also keeps adding page numbers. Does anyone know how I can stop it from doing these two things? I am getting seriously frustrated with this. :mad: If you open the HP Print software on the File menu look for a Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer or Preferences and in one of those you will most likely find the option to uncheck those options.

    @BasenjiDiva: Maybe a sheet of plywood to cover the door? (We put our dogs in wire crates when we leave the house and while they tolerate them when we gone, they cry loudly when they know we are around. I don't think we could entertain guests with their dramatics going on. :eek: ) While our dogs like and tolerate our little grandsons, there are times I feel like they need to be separated. Then I put high baby gates up to secure the dogs in the kitchen. Is that possible in your home? It is a bit of a hassle for people to go in and out of the kitchen but it is very doable and beats the alternative. And the dogs can see what's going on. Pat We have this problem with Querk too. He is almost never crated, except when we have a big group of people over. What we have done that works is put his crate in a room as far away from the gathering place as possible, and close the door…and let him cry it out. He usually quiets down after he realizes that he is in for the duration of the party. He will start up again if he hears someone. I have been known to put his crate in the van too, if the weather is cooperative.

    I'm in, too. Some are wire haired and others are smooth like a Basenji? Interesting breed.

    I do rescue, so I do like spay/neuter, but these folks who are breeding for aggressiveness won't pay any attention to any of the laws that are passed. However, putting them in jail should get their attention. Pits are a good dogs but can be bred into a fighting dog. Basenjis are now good breeds, but anyone who has done rescue, or owned a "damaged" basenji knows they will bite and that can do damage! We need to put the responsiblity on the bad owners who breed for fighting dogs or even the BAD breeders who breed defective dogs and know it, and sell them anyway. Puppy lemon law anyone??? That shouldn't hurt the good breeders who have "something" come up, but the breeders who consistantly have sick/bad dogs… Just a thought.

    JYS, They only get wet food occasionally. I want to try to add the canned pumpkin to their diet but I keep forgetting to pick it up when I am at the grocery store! :rolleyes:
