Interesting comments from the man who first crossed a Lab with a Poodle

  • People do wacko things don't they. He had this good intention that had a purpose and he carefully breed it then people hear of it and go crazy mixing any thing up that sounds good with poodle. I guess Basenji doesn't go good with poodle thank God. Pooenji, Basoodle.

I am sure someone will try it… there was a person on the east coast that was going to start the "latest fad" with American Esk dogs crossed with Basenjis.... yikes.... this was about 10yrs ago and thank goodness they changed their minds when it didn't take off like they thought it would. These were also the people that "highjacked" the Cambria name as they were connected somehow with the "breeder" in So. California that used it all the time until it was officially retired by AKC on the request of BCOA

  • Thanks, interesting article.

  • I had an enquiry for a stud from a man who wanted to use my Basenji on his Lakeland bitch!!! I refused immediately - this could have been a lethal cross!

what on earth for? i mean, i know "puppies" but why those two breeds?

  • He considered trhat the combination would create a 'super' hunter!

    He was probably correct!

  • There was a breeder in AZ that was crossing Basenjis with Fox Terriers (and registering them as Basenjis)… to make them faster and more aggressive for lure coursing. And was mixing Whippets and Basenjis too.... Had a couple of litter registrations pulled by AKC a few year back... but had also sold many of the pups in the AZ area. One of which made its way to the East coast and is being used for breeding Basenjis and those litters are being registered too. Pictures of the pups are clearly that the pups are mixed particularly by the coloring of the pups and the head shapes.

  • thanks for the info!that is horrible! Who do people INSIST on creating mutts and selling them as purebreds! That makes me so angry!!

  • Good info - thanks for posting. A couple of nights ago I watched a show on National Geographic channel about how the real purebred dogs have been changed over the course of many years. It showed German Shepherds, and how this 'specialized' (ahem) breeding has created the huge downward slope on the lower back of the dog. It showed some of the GSs with this accentuated slope, and how difficult walking is for these dogs. That is one of the things I really like about the Basenji - they have remained rather true to form. I really stand against the whole designer dog practice of breeding. These people do nothing for the better of the breeds they are crossing.

  • I do not get these designer hybrids anyway, and the amount of money they ask for them!! outragious!!

wasnt there some years ago, something like the "american barkless dog" as well? some basenji hybrid? but it appeared they werent barkless after all?

I have this scientific book on dogs and for some scientific studies they also crossed basenjis with ****er spaniels , it turned out they all could bark. BUt these werent the so called american barkless dogs. this book dated from the 60-ies and that american barkless dog form way later.

@tanza I don't believe there was a limit to the number of letters, though I wasn't paying much attention to whether the field stopped me from continuing. Tanza is nice! I was actually surprised no one has claimed the name :D

@tanza said in solving the "bad breeder" problem:: you know nothing about breeding ... In all fairness, @tanza, you don't have any idea where my breadth of knowledge lies. I have previously stated that I have no desire to become a breeder, but that isn't the point. Is it? You are venting because I am firmly standing my ground. We've been through this discussion before and I'd wager that we will do it again. Over the same thing, ad nauseam. either allow this or ... I understand that you are frustrated. @eeeefarm said in solving the "bad breeder" problem:: It is also fair to state any provable fact, but that should be left up to the individual, e.g. "my puppy has "such & such" condition, and my puppy came from "so & so" breeder with this existing condition. I agree with this, provided there is a way to prove that the illness could have been prevented by the breeder. That doesn't mean that every illness is breeder related. For example: Parvo and Giardia are widespread issues commonly contracted from one infected animal coming into contact with another, before or after the pup leaves the breeder. A pup with Giardia isn't necessarily a result of poor care by the breeder because it would be almost impossible to determine where the pup was infected. I think we should avoid referring to a breeder using subjective terms like: bad, irresponsible, etc. You cannot prove an opinion. If someone sees a statement (like that) about them and decides to contact an attorney, you and I aren't the ones who would be going to court. @JENGOSMonkey Thank you for your two cents (I liked the image, too). You are right. Most of what I do as a "moderator" is banning people who create profiles for commercial websites to improve their Google rank. I feel like if I kick them off right away, they won't bother us with inappropriate posts. I have banned over 2,000 profiles (so far), looks like I have 3 or 4 more to tend to today.

@tanza I'm definitely attending the next show as a recon trip. Not sure how the work here but if they're similarly easy to enter as the ones in the US, I do want to show Roux! LOL that's a hilarious saying; I absolutely appreciate a smart lady over cluelessness haha :face_with_tongue:

@lindenbaum I've long forgotten about this thread. If I am remembering correctly, I left it up so that people could read the flags that it may be a puppy mill and be able to make their own decision regarding that. I am deliberately wording that as "... may be... " because I do not have any personal interaction with "HH" and therefore cannot speak to it. (please note that I removed your "HH available breeds" list, no offense)
