  • Hi Sharon
Thank you so much for your quick response.
I am still grieving the loss of my 13 y/o B. boy "Einstein" (and not very well I might add) We had to let him let him "run free, to run like the wind" Jan 12, 2010.
He had just turned 13 on Dec 8th (b.1996) Einstein had developed diabetes about a year or so ago. In addition to a mass on his thyroid which had begun to produce hormones, it was also constricting his swallowing. He went into Diabetic Acidosis.
I was exteremly lucky that I was able to be with him 24/7. I had just finished nursing school when he got sick. My husband, the best, agreed that it would be best for the "bubbie" if he a full-time caretaker.
He was always my boy, but now he was my entire life…I didn't do anything without thinking of him first.
Well anyhow, sorry for the sob story, I tourture myself everyday by going on the internet looking at and for Basenji's, just happened to notice this poor petite little girl Sally-Mae needs a home. I live in Pittsburgh, Pa so it's a bit too far, but I certainly can help with transporting at anytime. We have 2 vehicles that accomodate crates, Honda CR-V and Subaru wagon.
Thank you again for alerting the proper person about Sally-Mae.

  • Hugs for what your going through with your belove Einstein.
We do have to take care of the family pets first.
Pam, if you want to do something, but can't take in a basenji yet.
Join BRAT in your area, and tell them you want to be a stationmaster.
You can't foster, but you can do transport, and we also need folks to do home visits,
checking shelters for reported b's in there, things like that.
YOU can do as little or as much as your time allows.
Hugs and hugs for your care of your golden oldie.
I treasure my senior animals..they are a gift of love everyday that are with us.

  • Sharon, thank you for your kind words regarding the loss of my "Boy". My heart is broken, I still talk to him (as he is, was the only one who really listens :( ) Time heals I hope. So far, not so much.
I would love to help out BRAT and the breed in any way I can, thank you for the suggestion. This will be part of the healing process, as I can't bear the thought of any Basenji without a home or a soft couch, blanket and slave to call their own.
I will contact BRAT this evening.
    BaRoo to you

  • This poem still touches me for the beloved b's I have loved and lost.
I hope this gives you some comfort.
    …...I’m Still Here..........
Friend, please don’t mourn for me
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day
and within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I’m always near.
I’m everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I’ll never depart
as long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I’ll never wander out of your sight-
I’m the brightest star on a summer’s night.
I’ll never be beyond your reach-
I’m the warm moist sand when you’re at the beach.

I’m the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I’m the beautiful flowers of which you’re so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I’m the first bright blossom you’ll see in the spring,
The first warn raindrop that April will bring.
I’m the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and you’ll see that the face in the moon shine is mine.

When you start thinking there’s no one to love you,
you can talk to through the Lord up above you.
I’ll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
and you’ll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I’m the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
and the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I’m the smile you see on a baby’s face.
Just look for me friend, I’m every place!

  • My sympathy on the loss of your wonderful boy.

The grieving can last a long time, and helping with transports or fostering can fill the hole in your heart a little. Einstein will never be replaced there, but our hearts have tons of room, and saving a dog in need in honor of the one you have lost is a good feeling

  • hi Pam - your Einstein was obviously a special being for you. Please don't beat yourself up for having such strong feelings where Einstein is concerned. Tell yourself it's natural to be feeling this - if you had lost a loved family member I am sure you would still feel some grief. In time, things will ease a little more. Maybe Einstein taught you a special love between a dog and owner that in the future you can spoil another dog with. Do take care.

  • Pam, when my heart dog died, I was in NO way ready for a second basenji.
But my remaining basenji needed someone. I knew that when I came home from work and she was by the back door softly brooing the sadest song I had ever heard from her.
So, I got her a basenji. It did help my heart heal as well.
She knew what would make the whole family better…and for us, it worked.
    Hugs.

  • Pam - Sorry always, to hear of a beloved dying and thank you Sharron for the poem. I've copied it - I hope you don't mind, its one of the nicest remembrance poems I've heard and on the lines of 'Do not stand by my grave and weep' which is one of my favourites too.

  • I love that "Do not stand by my grave and weep" as well.
I would have sent that, but didn't save a copy.
Yes, I think keeping these poems that touch us, so we can share them with unmet friends, is a very good thing.
    Hugs.
Its so hard to love and lose…only thing worse was not to have loved...

@dcmclcm4: Since she was found as a stray, no knowledge if she has been around children. When she gets overly excited to see someone she can be mouthy since she is still young so probably no real young children. I get her to sit, direct her focus away from my hand and give her a nylabone chew toy. This usually works. She is learning how to sit with the hand signal for sit and almost has it learned. She is a fairly easy pill giver as she has not spit out a pill yet! She did a playbow today to the Bs to try to get them to play. My two middle Bs, Arnie-10 years old and Bambi-8 years old play with her. She can bark but is not overly barky. I feel she does need more socialization and I am planning on doing that this coming week when the weather is better. If you need additional information or have specific questons about her, let me know. Jennifer I will Jennifer, my friend is seriously considering it :)
