Puppy's paws, ears, gums lose color when she sleeps

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Serengeti Colby is the father and mother is Ch. Serengeti Hot Tip.

Yeah I'm not super concerned because she acts pretty normal(but this is my first puppy, last was a rescue).
I sent the breeder an email since it doesn't seem urgent.

I probably should go to the vet and have a blood test done..

I know pale paws/gums can mean something really bad, but she doesn't seem to show other symptoms of something bad.

Again, I would not be too concerned… but if worried, just call Midge... and you will get the answers you need... in my opinion.... with puppies, not the same as adults that might show the same conditions

  • Cinnabun is lovely, what a nice blaze she has.

  • Let us know if you find out anything more.

  • Now she's getting dead skin on her ears and paws. :( I'll have to take her in again.

  • Hi Innociv, your puppy and my girl, Zoni are pretty closely related through your puppy's dam. It is just some little flakes or is it something more significant? Zoni had some flakey skin on her ear once when she got a yeast infection but it went away with a little treatment. Hopefully it is nothing serious.

  • She is a very pretty pup, hopefully she doesn't have anything major going on. If you are in the Tampa area, join us at dog Park some Sunday, we usually have 12 to 18 basenjis and would love to meet Miss Cinnabon.

  • She is a very pretty little girl. Hope all is well good luck.

    Did you call Midge?

  • Tanza, I didn't call Midge since it didn't seem urgent then, I sent her an email last week and haven't gotten a response yet.

Mac, thanks! I'm not usually around Tampa though. I live at south Orlando.

The dead skin on her ear I scraped off and there was blood on some parts afterwards. On her paws it is light flaking, it doesn't look serious like frostbite looks or anything, but seems odd for a puppy. She also bites at her paws.

  • Maybe she is having an allergic reaction to something? Has there been a change in food or anything recently?

Almost sounds like a food allergy? Have you changed the food? And chance she could have been bitten by a spider or some other critter? Red Ants?

  • Or maybe some new cleaning products, something new in/on the carpet/floors?

  • She's alright. The dead skin was just from some infection.

And Midge says the losing color when they sleep happens with some of them, especially puppies.

  • Glad everything is ok with your little Cinnabun.

  • Whew! Good to hear that all is okay now.

To each their own opinion Debra, I am working with Oakley on other issues right now and at twenty nine months he is still maturing. I don't live my life by the "what ifs", as of right now I'm able to be with him all the time when I'm not working so yes, I cater to his wanting to be around me, it's not rewarding for me to have a dog that's not independent of me, but it's the reality..and until I'm ready to address it 100% I haven't…he has made significant progress in crating and barrier frustrations...so I'm happy with the progress, and frankly..these other issues needs to be dealt with before addressing this...in order to make me leaving him with others successful. He's a happy, healthy young boy with a complex and stubborn mind, I'm going to work with him and not fight him on evolving and adapting his behaviors. However, your concern is noted and appreciated.

My Nika's eye got cloudy to the point of flicking your finger at it got no response then the eye turned blood red. Went to the eye vet and it turns out the lens inside the eye slipped. I had to give her other eye these very expensive eye drops called Xalatan or Travatan that kept the pressure down and the pupil small but even then the lens was moving around a little.

We use a cool coat on our dogs from time to time, mostly at shows.
