Brand new shelter challenge

Basenji Rescue
  • Actually that's not quite true.
    From their website:
"**Weekly Prizes: $1,000 will be awarded each week during the voting period for each organization with the most votes during that week (10 prizes of $1,000 each during the first voting period; participants are eligible for only one weekly prize during each voting period). Winners of Weekly Prizes are not eligible for Regional Prizes during the same voting period…No organization may win more than one Weekly Prize during each voting period. Organizations may win up to three (3) prizes total during each voting period. The Grand Prize for each voting period winners must be separate organizations (no organization can win more than one of the Grand Prizes for the most votes). Organizations receiving the Grand Prize are ineligible for Regional Prizes during that voting period (For example, if the Grand Prize Winner is located in California, the State Prize will go to the organization in that state with the highest vote total after the Grand Prize Winner). The Challenge Champion Prize winner from the previous calendar year is not eligible for the Grand Prize during the current calendar year, but remains eligible for all other prizes including the Weekly and Regional prizes."

  • Just voted….BRAT was top shelter in state but 8th overall....Keep voting

  • I am pestering all my friends to vote. Gosh knows we need the funds.

  • Well we started in 8th place but now have slipped to 10th.
    GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!
    :)

  • voting….

  • This is the email I sent to every person in my address book that I didn't think would kill me:

We have sadly dropped to 10th place overall. PLEASE can you vote and ask just a few friends to vote. One high burst might help us hold onto our top 10 spot. So many of the other rescues actually take out advertisements for people to vote. Since our rescue is national, that isn't an option for us. The only hope we have is for people like me to annoy people like you all and beg for help.

The massive rescue of over 50 dogs, and then all the litters, has severely strapped up. It is raining Basenjis.

On the other hand, want to see a miracle? This is what Florida rescue and truly saintly Pam started with:

From feral dogs, with only 11 adults now left, here are the final group, learning manners, understanding love:

The rules did change this time and made it more fair: Under the rules of the 2012 Shelter+ Challenge: ? No group may win more than one Grand Prize in 2012. Winners of the Grand Prize are not eligible for state or regional grants during the same voting round, but are eligible for all other prizes. We congratulate Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc., our first Grand Prize winners of 2012! ? Regional prizes (State, Canadian, or International) may not be won during two consecutive voting rounds by a single organization; they are now limited to a maximum of two prizes during non-consecutive voting rounds per group per year. ? Weekly Winners are not eligible for Regional (State, Canadian, or International) awards during the same voting round. Weekly Winners are not excluded from Grand prizes and Special prizes.<<< But I agree. I think that they should limit Grand Prize to every OTHER year and state to once a year, not every other voting. It has become much like a steady supplemental income for a few groups. I think after so much money, the group should be eliminated completely for a while. As it is, many wonderful rescues have zero chance.

I leave Luny in the kitchen mainly because that has flooring that won't be harmed when he spills the water bucket (I got one of those flat-sided ones that hangs with not a lot of water but he still makes a mess with it). When I leave in the morning it's dark out anyway. Lately he seems "resigned" to having to be in the kennel when I leave for work - he no longer howls and doesn't pee in it and doesn't tear up the rugs much any more (I can tell he doesn't really like it though). He doesn't hate the crate because he'll go in there readily to be fed and look for treats so that's good (EL D never would go near a crate and he would actually destroy one if forced). Luny's still a little anxious when I "disappear" even for short times so I'm not sure I can trust him loose in the house yet but I'll work on that. I leave him a kong with some peanut butter smeared kibbles - he hasn't yet learned (as EL D did early on) to toss the thing around so trying to lick out the insides keeps him occupied for awhile. We're progressing I think.
