    It's a difficult situation, but having a young child and dogs can be a great combination.

    When I was pregnant of Ryan (Ryan is 9months now) we let the dogs be a part of everyting.
    We planned that the dogs must keep their place at our family.
    They didn't had a change with anything, only for us it was a bit harder because we wanted to keep the exact same routine in the family.
    They see Ryan as a brother, because of the fact we give them the same treatment.

    It's wrong that your Basenji bite into the blancet but there must be a reason behind it, maybe he feels left behind while he was your baby before your other baby was born?

    Maybe you could start also with taking him with you while you care for the baby.
    For example, when you are going to give the baby a bath, talk to Leroy and ask him to come along, let him look into the bathroom what you are doing and speak to him..
    Chafuko loves it to sit underneath the baby bath and just keep an eye on what's going on..

    Kim, one of the reasons your situation worked out sooooo well, is that you made Ryan's presence a huge benefit for your dogs,; they got to spend just as much (if not more) time doing things with you and the baby. All kinds of good stuff happened when Ryan arrived, so they made a positive association with him. The way you handled it is ideal….and it has paid off for all of you :)

    Just after we made the decision we wanted a baby, we talked and thought about how we could get this result. When we were sure we thought about everyting, we got pregnant :D

    It's important that you can/try to think the way your Basenji thinks and work with that.

    For what it's worth, I have noted that in households with a strong human leader/boss/alpha/disciplinarian (pick one!) there are less squabbles among dogs, at least when the human is present. My neighbour has Rotties, had two bitches that hated each other and would fight, but they didn't do it when she was around. She did have to be careful that they could not get together in her absence. ;) Interesting anecdote: If my mare is bothering my old gelding and I notice it, I can break it up by yelling at her out the window! Guess I am "alpha" in that herd.

    Congratulations on the future new addition. Boy/girl is a good combination. As others have advised let them meet on neutral ground and take them for a long walk together. For every good interaction praise both inordinately. As Curlytails says don't rush it. Keep us posted, please and best wishes to you all.

    @Rocky1: Basenjis chew,this s a fact of life. It might sound like a crazy thing to do,but I bite my pups back. It teaches them that I'M THE BOSS ! It has worked for me for the almost 36 years that I've lived with the little beastys. You can call me crazy,or wrong I don't care Works for me,and my dogs all respect me,and love me. Kathryn Wow, Kathryn - that's funny! I'm sure you just nibble a little. Their feet smell like Tostitos, so just wondering -does the rest of the dog taste like a snack??? LOL

    @Kananga: I agree on the last post about playing vs. walking. I can take my Basenji on a walk for a solid hour and he won't be very tired. Encourage a few B-500s and play a few games with my B and he'll be napping in no time. I think the short bursts of high intensity exercises become more effective at wearing these guys out. Just my opinion though. I totally agree. In the course of Kipawa's day, we go to an off-leash dog park so he can run like crazy. For the evening walk, we do controlled leash walking. He is definitely more tired after the off leash play time where he runs like a bat out of hell!

    My previous males never had an opportunity to meet other basenjis (outside their breeder kennel) so don't know if the experience with my current female is "typical" or not. The first time she encountered another, it was a tri-color older female that was a real bitch and instantly got aggressive (now whenever they see each other its "hackles up"). The first time I took her to a lure coursing event, mine was friendly enough until a little blind female came up and bit her. The second time I took her to a LGRA event, a lady came up behind us (while mine was trying to potty) with her tricolor female and her dog attacked mine. So now hackles go up any time another female comes within shouting distance.

    I grew up with birds, hamsters, cats, dog, rabbits and we had hives of honey bees. Never anything wrong with me all my life even got lucky never stepped on a bee. My kids have cats, dogs, bird and my daughter never worn pretty little dress cause she would go right under a car with her dad and get grease all over her. Dirt and my son go hand in hand. They have been healthy. Now as far as walking to school I could not do that. Been far to many kids never got to school to many out there take kids. So my kids have never been allowed to walk to school. One mile there but anything could happen. People that usually do not want animals have there little fancy house and do not want the hair or the dirt. We have a friend who has three children just got a puppy about month ago poor puppy. Puppy got over gate in wash room and well had fun while they were at work. She just about lost it aniamls are better off without being that kind of home I told her so. Sad news her husband just went to work for Science Diet and they have a animal day once a month and they told him it was important they had a animal. He lied when got job and said he did. Now there is a puppy my heart really goes out to. Rita Jean
