i've alway hated the arguement that buying a dog from a breeder means a shelter dog looses a home. (not that dr mcconnell mentions that, but i hear it so often.) if i only had rescues, i'd have one maybe 2 dogs. as it is, i have 4, but one is a rescue.

  • I am very lucky, I do rescue and have support of many of the PNW breeders. I also have a very responsible breed club who take back any basenjis I find fall into rescue.
I am also able to refer folks to quality breeders who have puppies, who don't want a rescue.
So, win/win…and best of all the b's WIN!

I know that picture of Bing well - it hangs in pride of place in the hall. I can only guess how you came by it as I would think his breeder would have been the only person we gave a copy to! Thanks for the info re Fanconi. We will obviously keep that very much in mind.

@Maya: When i was first in touch with Maya's breeder i asked lots of questions about health testing. I knew the temperment of Maya's mum (which is fantastic!!) as i had met her several times, so i asked all about Dad. Having witnessed some horrific temperments around the ring over here, health and temperment were a priority for me… I also would have been concerned if the breeder hadn't asked LOTS of questions of me. She wanted to know if i'd researched the breed, if i knew they weren't necessarily easy to live with (and explained!) and just lots of questions about me to make sure she knew if i would be a responsible basenji owner. I think with such a unique breed you need a responsible breeder who is looking for a permenant home who has done their research :) This was totally my experience as well. I was very aware that it wasn't just us interviewing a breeder, but the breeder getting to know us. I was really grateful to see that our amazing breeder took the time to make sure that we knew what we were getting into. It would make me exceptionally leery if a breeder handed over a Basenji, no questions asked.

Exactly, lvoss…. anyone can breed just "because"... it is the right thing to do... IMO... NO.. it is not... people that breed need to have the right reasons... not just to have puppies to sell, because you need to be responsible for every single pup.. for its entire lifetime... and getting money for those pups is not the objective of a responsible breeder.

@etzbseder: Did anyone else get the email about the new issue of the Breeder? The second story on the email has a picture of a basenji and is from Reveille Basenjis. Just wanted to point that out. That would be Damara Bolte, she is a officer of BCOA, besides a judge, breeder, handler…. The article was from AKC
