    Could be any time… from now till next Fall.... if you have bitches in the area that are intact and come in season that might bring her in... if not, and not around others in season, she might just wait till late summer/early Fall

    Have you aske her breeder about the cycles of her Dam or other Basenjis, if they have more then one?

    I did get your email… I am going to send you the link to coursing in NO. California... (most likely in the morning) will be a bit of a drive for you, but there are some trials in the Sac area... I don't really know what Nevada has, but will send you the links for AKC and ASFA.

    My puppy's first heat came in early around 7 months (week of her first show, too :rolleyes:). I was watching around 6 months because I knew several relatives in her line cycled twice a year. Doesn't look like that is the case with Zoni so far. Yeah!

    My pup's first heat was when she was a little over 10 months old. She had been around many girls that were in heat a month and a half before she went in and I had hoped that she would be in and over her heat before she returned to me from her show road trip LOL - no such luck. :D:D.

    @tanza -- I know. They also don't typically have one in June, which is why I was asking about whether she had whelped last cycle. I don't think we have a lot to go on. Not being critical, but "my dog seems to be in heat for over a month" doesn't provide a lot of information and could mean a lot of different things.

    Most Vets will not recommend spay during season and unless there is a medical reason for doing it now, will recommend waiting till she is at least 3 to 4 weeks past the end of her season. I would also agree you should put it off and wait. Keep in mind however the neutered males can achieve a tie with a bitch in season, however considered "safe sex"… but since you have two males, this could present a problem, so something to keep an eye on

    @Buddys: all those male dogs at your front door! I mentioned to my brother who is a first time girl puppy owner, and he laughed when I told him to look out for the male dogs. The other day, a blind dog who never goes outside ended up sniffing at his front door from down the street!!!! talk about a sex drive! Exactly, most people do not believe you when you tell them that male dogs will do most anything to get at a bitch in season. Years ago when I had 3 bitches in season at one time, there was a very old in-tact Lab that lived 4 blocks away… He had to be at least 14. But as soon as the girls were "ripe" and ready, there he would be walking back and forth in front of the house.... never saw that dog any other time

    I REALLY wanted the plaque vaccine to pan out. When it came out, my vets (who are cautious) said to wait a couple of years. Well, it has been found safe, but they discontinued it as it doesn't work. I really need a miracle. Though the truth is, she is good about it now and heck, I spent more time grooming the chow 2x a week than I do brushing her teeth every night. I still have to get them cleaned every 3 mos though. My vet recommended trying a water pik. ROFLMAO, me and what army? Sigh. So we just keep getting them cleaned.     @massagemom3: Your right the SPCA wasn't even concerned that they allowed a female to be there and didn't physically check her. They said may she was too hairy down there. NO HAIR! , I kept asking where is her inguinal scaring…my vet didn't even look. I'm going to a new vet! It also explained her being aggressive approx 1-2 weeks prior to us noticing her season had arrived. And Yes she is VERY clean. We just kept her in the kitchen with fresh towels every day, and she had little "show". She had enough mind you,but not a huge amount. She was so clean that she threw up a few days from cleaner herself. YUCK! I felt so bad for her. She slept a lot. But she is getting fixed soon. Yes I am having blood work done before the procedure. The SPCA didn't feel the need to do that, so I said No thank you. Good for you!!!!! Sally is lucky to have a great caring MOM!!!!

    Just a word about pyo….the ones that are the most deadly are called a 'closed pyometra'...meaning the infection is sealed in the uterus...nothing comes out..the dog just crashes. When their is fluid leaking you can catch it, and treat it. I think it is unlikely that Jazzy has a pyo, because her activity, and appetite are still relatively normal. A lot of bitches change a little during estrous...some get more crabby, some more clingy. Then when the added change of bringing in a boy, I would imagine she is just subdued :)
