Like much internet advice I find short answers incomplete - and mine was. I really want to ad that making a crate/xpen/gated puppy area should never be seen as "punishment". These partitioned puppy areas should be conditioned to be safe places for a puppy/dog. Mine, thankfully, tolerates and even likes her xpens probably because it's where she eats, receives treats, sleeps, chews and even plays. This took about a week or so. Now she voluntarily goes into her xpens (in my case) on her own and when she's put there involuntarily she might whine for a minute before settling down with a chew and/or going to sleep.
New Puppy Name

In respone to AJ's human- he meant Ares… sorry- I disn't differentiate the spellings! Thank You all for your suggestions... I figure the name is going to be the easy part and raising the puppy will be the hard part so I am a little scared that the naming has been so hard!.... It's like having a baby in the house- you have all those emotions..anxious,scared,tired,joyful and excited.. I'll be sure to post my roller coaster ride once I hop on board.
Thanks again everyone -
Malaika (an African name meaning Angel
Do you know which language? I am fascinated by this because the Hebrew word for angel is Mal'akh. Very similar.
I like Malaika.

Nicole i found the name listed under African girls names ?
Not sure if it would be too long , having 3 syllables but i do like it.
Chealsie, can't wait to hear of your adventures -
I am with Janneke, I usually have a name for quite some time and then I get the pet..
In Otis' case I wanted him to be Bruno..but my family totally shot that down, so Otis it was..he looks like an Otis..to me, and it means "the one whom hears"…not the one whom listens..What an apt name for a Basenji Petra
-
Nicole, have just googled Malaika, it means Angel in Swahili and Arabic

"I figure the name is going to be the easy part and raising the puppy will be the hard part" – that's the truth!
Call the names out loud - as if you were calling a dog to come in the house and change your tone of voice as if calling it to come for dinner or to sit on your lap. Then see which name you like. -
However, remember that the Basenji will try and live up to it's name… so choose carefully!!!! Or you may have named he/she something you will live to regret!!!

hehehe, I was just going to say something about my reservations about naming a basenji after a god of war.

It took me ages to come up with Maya's name, and i had to be difficult and pronounce it the original chinese way (ie my-a not may-a) which confuses everyone! lol I do like pretty names and tend to give my dogs human names as well. Of your choices I would go with Lily (beautiful name and was on my shortlist for Maya!) for a girl and Indy for a boy. I had a female parrot called Indy so it could be used for either as well

How funny, it never occurred to me to pronounce it any way other than my-a
-
Yes, me too. I actually found it on a chinese baby name website (random i know lol) as it means "dream" in chinese and Maya's registered name is American Dreamz so i thought it fitted well. And on there it said the prounciation was my-a as well..
But the majority of people do call her may-a. I have stopped correcting people now, she refuses to listen to anyone but me anyway so it doesnt matter what other people call her
-
I totally understand about people pronouncing the name wrong. For the longest time people called Rally, Raleigh and were confused that she is a girl. But they all seemed to figure out the pronounciation if I told them it's RALLY like in a Pep Rally. Then they were like "OH! Why would you name your dog that?"

I love the name lily. I just got my B mix on saturday and we named her Lilu. A character from the Fifth Element movie who was a weapon of destruction whos temple was in Egypt.
-
One caution, the basenji lives up to the name. Ares might be one to stay away from. I am partial to Indiana (Indy) and Alori (Lori) but there are obvious reasons for that.
We let Indy and Lori name themselves
- For Indy I kept calling him names and when I got to Indiana he let out a big yodel so I figured thats the one he wanted
- For Lori Turin went and hung out with her and said names until she jumped up and danced around at Aloria (Love)
Good luck let us know what you pick
-
Kingsley, what have you done ! naming her after a weapon of mass destruction
What if she lives up to her name
Think i'l stick to Malaika (Angel) for our pup;) -
Thanks.. with the advice, Ares is out of the running… I dont need to add fuel to the fire....
-
I agree with being careful what you name them (live up to it!), and especially saying, and yelling, the name in many tones of voice. I personally like 2-syllable names, easy to say and call out, with 'come_____', 'No ___ no', etc. Get a couple of names you like then see which fits the dog, which they respond to. Then enjoy your new puppy!

We have a B breeder, here in Aus, who called her little bitch Leeloo, and her reg name is –------- Fifth Element :). Is your little girl pronounced Leeloo, or Lie loo ???
