"New Exhibitor" question on entry forms

Basenji Showing
  • I'm filling out the entry forms for Zoni's first couple of shows . There is an "Are you a new exhibitor?" question at the bottom of all the forms. What is that used for? And how long would I check the box? Just for the very first time? I'm doing a specialty and an all breed show the first weekend and then another all breed show the next weekend.

    Thanks!

Edit: Also there is an "exhibitor's code" too with five blanks. What is that?

  • The AKC entry forms started asking the question "Are you a new exhibitor?" about a year ago. I think they are trying to find out how many people are starting out in showing. They are also encouraging clubs to offer programs at their shows for new exhibitors. I don't really know that they are making much use of the information though. I have accidently checked the box on a couple of entries.

The exhibitor number is, I believe, for pro-handlers.

  • Onofrio has an exhibitor's code that they want you to use - but I've only done it when I make online entries.

I have noticed that many of the shows around here have short seminars or even a handling class for new exhibitors before or after the shows. I think it is a great idea and hope it becomes a standard feature. :)

Okay, It was Onofrio so that makes sense now.

I noticed on the premium for the all breed show that they have a "new exhibitors" briefing, so maybe the checkbox helps them alert us newbies.

I've tried bait and no bait in the ring. I think bait works better for Logan, but not for me. He likes it and responds to it well, but as a new handler it's a pain in the butt. I know what I'm expected to do. Doing it once in the ring is hard. I get caught up in the minute and then forget what I'm supposed to do the next. I once stacked Logan backwards on the table. D'oh! Logan is SUPER food driven and he knows if I have cookies in my pocket. That's all he'll pay attention to. Jumping on the handler is frowned upon. Yes, I know training and time will cure it. Not there yet. Too many hobbies. Showing, breeding, MGBs, stereos, astronomy, motorcycles, family, friends, travel, house, etc. I need more time.

Although I am an European exhibitor I have never heard about this judge. Have you tried to ask at FB?

Good Luck!! I think not having anyone else in the class might help with your reintroduction to the ring. You won't have to worry about being too close behind or having someone too close to you. You can just focus on your dog.
