My Basenji's tail stopped curling…

Basenji Talk
  • Today we were at the park and my basenji took a bit of a fall from a ledge we were sitting on. She didn't cry or show any signs of being hurt, but her tail wasn't curling when she got back up and still isn't. At first I thought she was just scared, but its been about an hour since we got home. She is acting fine. Any thoughts? Should I be concerned?

  • I read some were that there tail could get broken not to uncurl it or pull on it. We don't uncurl or pull the tail but could be broken. If it is broken I don't know what you can do could be maybe in the morning it will be all right. If not you may want to go to the vet and have it looked at.

  • I think I'd have your B examined by a vet soon - no later than tomorrow - if she still isn't curling her tail. It could be that she injured her back and that is why she can't curl her tail - nerve damage. She may not show signs of pain with a back injury. Just as with a human, the injury would prevent her from feeling the sensation. We had a dog who injured his back from falling off our bed. The Vet was able to pinch the tissue between his toes with a clamp and the dog didn't even feel it.

  • My boy bruised his tail when he was younger. It stayed down for a couple days and would only curl up when he squatted to pee. But then it returned to normal and he's been fine since. Although he didn't have the curliest of tails to begin with. lol

Short answer- NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Basenjis are hunters and most will do anything in their power to get to the critters in their environment. Mine spend most of their outdoor time looking for chipmunks that live under the shed. If you decided to get the hamster it will have to be kept in a room where the basenji can't go. I have and do keep basenjis and small animals in the same house but they aren't allowed near them. I don't think they even know I have the geckos and snake! Some dogs are fine with small critters but I personally would not let them near each other. It's not worth the risk in my opinion. Accidents happen in the blink of an eye! Also, rats make much better pets for kids than hamsters. ;)

We have two cats and two Basenji?s, but the basenji?s grew up with the oldest cat. They live togehter as a family, but the first meeting between Buana (oldest Basenji) and Spaik (oldest cat) was heavy Spaik was so mad at us he went under the bed and didn't show himselfe, when Buana got to close he hit Buana. Cats usually need time to get used to them, for you I think you need to watch them the first weeks constantly. From their behavior you can see how it's goint between them
  • Maybe he's not a Basenji…!

My Basenjis catch and kill wasps and have never got stung in doing so - their snap and release is too quick for them to get stung. However one did get stung on his foot when he trod on a dying bee. Often Basenjis get frightened of a particular thing when they sense their owner's fear. Are you afraid of wasps, Shelley?
