Vitamin/mineral deficiancy?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Ever since the weather has (finally) gotten nice Gossy gets to spend more time outdoors both before I go to work and after I come home. I've noticed, however, that she now chews on anything plastic - the plastic on the sprinkler, the plastic guard on the lawn mower, plastic garden edging, plastic plant pots, etc. There are plenty of little creatures for her to chase while in the yard so it's not boredom. I'm wondering if she might be missing something in her diet?
She gets the new grainfree Canidae (was getting Innova) kibbles with a chunk or two of raw steak every day and often a marrow bone when I go to work (not every day).

  • That's a possibility. Though I'm not sure what's in plastic that could be missing in the diet. Mine have eaten dirt/clay to get the minerals. Can you get Steve's Raw Dog Food? It's sold mostly at Whole Foods Market. http://www.stevesrealfood.com/.

I'm picking up a new tri today from BRAT and I'm going to try it. The woman who runs BRAT said it help her B that had chronic diarrhea. You can mix it with kibble. I'm also going to use Organix dry dog food to mix it with.

  • I think plastic is just 'junk food' for them, my Nicky will chew plastic anytime she can!

Yes, the test for Lyme disease is a blood test. It is a special test that is not in the regular panels– they usually run it separately, after they rule out other things. I hope your B is better! Did you find out what was wrong?

@Marie: One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet and which is recommended when treating giardia is to bathe the dog. This is because the giardia cysts can adhere to the hair around the hind end of the dog who then can re-infect himself by grooming. More of a factor in a long haired dog, obviously, but if it were me I'd be giving Oakley a few baths just to be on the safe side. (I'm sure he'll thank me for this suggestion!) Oooooo, I didn't know that! That is a great bit of info!

I just use Missing Link, and have recently switched over to the one w/ glucosamine for the oldsters. They're not that old, but they're heavy performance dogs.

Well, your precious ones only have to have a rabies booster once every 3 years! Please tell all your friends in Wichita about the ordinance change – the newspaper buried the announcement in other animal-related information, I'm sure many pet owners in the city don't have a clue that they no longer have to booster every year.
