Basenji cat?

Basenji Talk

  • I was in the computer lab the other day at school finishing up some homework with a friend when I started talking about my B, Mali.
"I keep catching her climbing and sleeping on the backs of the chairs, and the other day while I was vacumming she kept swatting my hands with her paws." the teacher at the front of the room just smiled and asked "What kind of cat do you have?" I just laughed, the lady honestly though I had a cat!

    Anybody else had this mixup?

  • I know what you mean about the cat-like paws. I can picture it, as if she was swatting your hands to catch them in her clutch. When I play (tease) with Duke, he gets a very firm and sure grip of my forearm/wrist with his paws and front legs and stops my arm from moving about to get what I have in my hand. He has alot of muscle, has a very good grasp - very surprising to me. Haven't experienced that kind of determination from any pet. He also pounces with his front paws. He'll toss almost anything (acorns, twigs, balls, stuffed toys, etc.) in the air with his mouth just to watch it roll and then pounce on it with his paws. He is so fun to watch!!:D

  • Aren't B's just like cats? Abbey attacks the vacuum cleaner. Pounces on it and gives it a few good swats just like cats do. She also does the thing with her paws on my wrist and won't let me raise my arm.

  • yea when lucy was young i was walking her and some lady asked me "why are you walking your cat" i almost fell on the floor laughing

  • well I came to class one day with my hands all scratched up and I was like "Man, look what Mali did to me… I thought only cats shredded hands!" Mali pounces things too, I remember dropping an ice-cube on our tile floors and when it slid across the floor Mali was on it, batting and chasing!

  • Nala plays with me like a cat does with string. Her paws are up as you describe and she bats at my hand or the toy. Funny that they seem cat-like in many ways!

  • I also have scratches on my hands and wrist all the time, Sahara will use her paws to stop me from anything she doesn't think I need to do. She also uses her paws to get things off of my tables, bedroom dressers, end tables. You should see my house everything is pushed back as far as I can get it so Sahara won't. I am about to decorate my Christmas tree and I am wondering what she will do. Has anyone had experience with a Basenji and a Christmas tree? She also throws things in the air and pounces on it to get it and do it again, I have never seen a dog play catch with themselves before. They are an amazing breed, and we love watching what she will surprise us with next, just hope it is a good thing. haha!!!!!!

  • This is too funny!!

My husband says that TOPAZ's mom MUST have mated with a cat because all she wants to do is sleep on our laps and she likes to walk along the perimeter of the back of the couch JUST like a cat. I just figured she was a weird dog ROFL :D

They both do the swatting with the paws but C3 acts more like a dog! HA!

yeh… I have to tell ya' I love C3PO's name... Star Wars all the way!!! lol...

Anywho.... yeah I know. When ever I talk to people about my B my friends are all like "yeah... her dog is half cat..."

Mali also does this pose that my sister and I call the "OMG" pose... it's like when you spook her and she is sitting on her butt but her paws are up like she's raising her hands... then she wigs out and starts the Basenji 500....

  • We actually didn't name either of them…we got them as adults. But C3's whole litter was a StarWars parade :D He has all brothers...RtwoDtwo, Hans Solo, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, DarthVader

    Hysterical I know :D

BTW-another B-cat story. Topaz decided yesterday she was going to hang out under the dining room table to groom herself huh??

  • you know what I have been to that website before! And I remember seeing all these star wars names under there and thinking "what an awesome name…"

That's so crazy!!! But Awesome!!! lol ^_^

Mali has been doing that lately too... but I'm so nervous with her stitches...

  • Can't find Joey's name. He is registered. Wonder why?

Also, had a party the other night and everyone at the party said, "Wow is that a cool dog!" One thought, "wow, what a cool animal, not sure what it is though!" Most said I have to have one, but I warned them that they are not for everyone and do lots of research before you decide to get one. I told them about his chewing and the things he has destroyed and the good things too!

  • I think, had we known about how the Basenji was, before we got Bandit (our first B) we would have never had one. But thankfully in our ignorance, we now have a lifelong obsession with one of the most "interesting" breeds in the world!!

  • We actually did know some of what Bs are like. We went for it though and was allowed a two week test run with Joey. It took more than two weeks for him to adjust so we really didn't know how he was going to be. We actually didn't officially make him ours until after a month so we could have decided not to keep him. Despite the detruction of two pairs of shoes, blankets and towels in his crate, and a few other things, we still wouldn't trade him in! The other antics and peculiarities of this breed make up for the things lost!

You're doing a great job introducing the cat to the basenjis, I would continue to do what you're doing, but don't leave them alone just yet. I would keep them in different rooms while you are away. Also, as another person said, the cat and the bird will be more of a challenge, since the cat is more likely to hunt the bird. Keep the supervision going with all three species. My basenjis always wanted to chase cats they saw outside, but did not chase the cats we had, because they had been socialized and they thought of the cats as part of the pack.

Kiro Gurl, That's a great pic. I have a bay window on which my 2 are constantly watching the goings on in the neighborhood. Someone in the house will say, "where's the dogs?" and the inevitable reply is "they're on Neighborhood Watch duty." Needless to say we are alerted to every unwanted intruder…..marauding cats, wilily squirrels, and those despicably lawless off leash dogs (with the occasional 'bad to the bone' large wild bird thrown in for good measure;) ) sigh, I feel sooooo safe. I thank Darwin every day that they don't have opposable thumbs 'cuz they'd be unlocking and opening the door for anyone they deemed as a suitable playmate, tummy scratcher, or cuddler:D ! Now that you have a 'window watcher' too, I suggest you invest in windex. There's nothing better to get those dog snot streaks off the windows!! (BTW...welcome to the forums toddsgirl)
